Wigan have taken up the option to extend head coach Shaun Wane's contract for the 2014 Super League season.

Wane is currently in his second year in charge of the Warriors, having replaced Michael Maguire in October 2011.

The 48-year-old guided Wigan to the League Leaders' Shield in 2012 and will lead his hometown side at Saturday's Challenge Cup final against Hull FC.

Wane was linked with a role at NRL side New Zealand Warriors in May, but will now remain at the DW Stadium.

Owner Ian Lenagan told the Wigan Evening Post:, external "He has done everything we have asked of him, and as far as we're concerned, it would have been silly not to [extend his contract].

"We can all see the input he's made on the team and the way the players have responded to having Shaun as head coach."

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester in May, Wane said the chance to coach in Australia would appeal, although he was more than content with his role at Wigan, for whom he appeared more than 150 times in a nine-year spell as a player.

"It [the NRL] is a different competition with different challenges in a different country and I want to test myself.

"The fact is that I'm in my dream job in this country and I'm loving it. It's nice to be spoken about but I'm the Wigan Warriors coach and it's a fantastic job that I have. I'm really happy where I am."
