Wigan fought back brilliantly to beat Widnes and close the gap to Super League leaders St Helens to two points.

Oliver Gildart went over for Wigan, but Tom Olbison, Jay Chapelhow and Ryan Ince crossed before half-time to put Widnes 14 points in front.

However, Warriors hit back with three tries in six minutes from Joe Burgess, Morgan Escare and Willie Isa.

Wigan secured the win with tries from Ryan Sutton and Taulima Tautai either side of Ince's second of the night.

Friday's other Super League reports

Warriors have won five successive games since losing to Saints in March, though they were made to work hard by Widnes, who have lost five in a row.

The visitors were without several of their star players, with Ben Flower, Liam Farrell and Sam Tomkins among those not in the squad, and they lost Burgess to a knee injury late on, which coach Shaun Wane described after the game as "serious".

Tommy Leuluai's yellow card shortly before half-time increased the pressure on Wane's side, but Widnes were unable to cope once Wigan were restored to 13 men.

Vikings remain ninth in the table, only two points ahead of bottom side Catalans and already four points outside the top eight places.

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"Fair play to them, they played really well and I thought they played the conditions really well.

"It was a great effort from Widnes with the amount of players that they've got out, they really pushed us but we find a way to win these games.

"We have a 'never say die' spirit within the team and we keep turning up for each other."
