Thank you for joining us today. We hoped for a fiery game to heat up a cold autumn day in Wigan, and we certainly got it.

We'll be back next week with live coverage from Headingley of both the women's international between England and Wales from 12:00 GMT, followed by the second men's Test against Samoa at 14.30.

    See you then.

We wait and see what changes, if any, Shaun Wane makes to this England side for the second Test.

Two of the most hotly anticipated players in the squad, uncapped Wigan pair Junior Nsemba and Liam Marshall, did not feature on home turf today.

Will they make their international bows in Leeds?

  4. 'Get comfortable being uncomfortable'published at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

    Paul Rowley
Salford Red Devils head coach on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I don't think Samoa, within seven days, will have the opportunity to change dramatically. I think England will look towards that and see a lot of opportunities.

This game had a 50-point scoreline written all over it for England. You can't go into a game thinking you're going to score 50 points. But they can go into the next game with the attitude they took into this one.

Be disciplined, earn the right, and be willing to take Samoa right to the end. If they have to win it in the 79th minute, that's the attitude they've got to have. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

England have been really tough and disciplined today.

England's Harry Smith speaking to BBC TV: "We spoke about getting the game in a grind and playing an 80 minute game - I think we did that.

"We talked about the forwards emptying their tanks in defence and the backs would do their job to get us out. That's the way we wanted top play and I think it worked."

On the pushing and shoving: "I tried not to be [involved]. I run over and three people grabbed me. It's not my scene that, I'll leave it for the big boys."

On the final Test next week: "We have some gears to go through and we can play better - we can go up a gear."

    Paul Rowley
Salford Red Devils head coach on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

"Changes for next week? When you talk about cohesion, that applies particularly to your spine, so maybe in the middle, there's some movement there, but I don't think Shaun Wane needs to make too many changes. Don't fix something that's not broken. These guys have earned another crack at it."

That was probably the worst thing England could have done getting underneath Samoa's skin.

Samoa will bring that into the game next week.

  8. 'We had some moments that weren't great moments'published at 16:43 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

Samoa head coach Ben Gardiner, speaking to BBC TV: "It was very physical, we missed the start we needed, they got the start, they won key moments in the game and that was the difference tonight.

"We played the game we wanted to play, we probably need a bit more possession to play the way we want to. We just had some moments that weren’t great moments. We’ve a little bit of work to do, but that’s part of playing Test match football, putting two games together and going again next week."

  9. 'Very pleased, but we've errors to fix up'published at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

England head coach Shaun Wane, speaking to BBC TV: “There there was a lot of good stuff. We played really well in that first period, but our errors led to their tries. We’ve a lot of errors to fix up but to get a win over a good side, I’m very pleased.

"Our line speed was good, I’m sure it was entertaining for the fans; maybe a few too many points, and there are a few things to fix up.

"George Williams can play better than he did and there were other performances out there that could have had man of the match. Overall we played OK but we can improve.

"We’re looking forward to the second Test, we’ll be firing at Leeds and they’ll be desperate not to go 2-0, so it has the makings of a fantastic game.”

    England were connected.

The damage was done in the opening 30 minutes. England were more professional. With Samoa it took them half-an-hour to get up to speed of the game.

England centre Herbie Farnworth, speaking to BBC Two: "It was good to play back in England. A couple of friends and family made the tip and I loved it.

"It was physical and it started to get tasty! They are a quality side and they have a talented team.

"Disappointed with some of the tries we let in, but a win is a win.

"We got a fit pack and us wingers come in and take the yardage. We stuck to the game-plan.

"Going to enjoy this win and they don't come often, a win in England is always a special moment."

  12. 'Delighted with the performance'published at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

    Paul Rowley
Salford Red Devils head coach on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

England have dominated. They'll be a little disappointed to concede 18 points. But they'll be delighted with the performance against a top-tier nation.

  13. 'We want it to be physical'published at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

England captain George Williams, speaking to BBC Two: "We lost two interception tries, but the most pleasing thing was that we won. But Shaun Wane will have us wanting to get better. We want it to be physical. We know Samoa are physical. It’ll be the same next week and we’ll be ready for it."

England captain George Williams was named man of the match. There were a few stand-out individual showings from the hosts, but Williams never put a foot wrong.

One of his finest showings in an England shirt.

We will indeed return next week for the second men's Test between these sides. That's at Headingley next Saturday.

It's a shame there are only two matches in this series - Samoa started today very slowly but grew in competitiveness. A three-match series may well have been epic.

    Sharon Shortle

We've got two or three pockets or pushing and shoving going on. As soon as anyone tries to go in to separate the two, another one goes in to separate the man who's gone in to separate.

I think every single player was involved there, from both teams. All very unseemly.

England manager Shaun Wane had a big grin on his face, as referee Liam Moore decides nothing more than an England penalty is required after that WWE imitation.
