Guernsey RFC stay up after win over Westcombe Park

Guernsey RFC secured their National Three London survival with a final-day 42-28 victory against Westcombe Park.

Luke Sayer dived over for their fourth try in the 64th minute to seal the bonus point they needed to make sure of avoiding relegation.

Guernsey were bottom of the league at the end of February but have won seven of their last nine matches.

It was an emotional afternoon as the long-serving forward Nick Barton announced his retirement.

Three of the bottom four won but Guernsey's triumph means they end the season five points above the drop zone.

"In the first 40 minutes we were all over the place," head coach Jordan Reynolds told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"It was pretty stressful but once we got that fourth-try bonus point that made us safe, we relaxed and played some really good rugby - it's hard to play good rugby when you know you're under that kind of pressure.

"I think the scoreline's a bit flattering to be honest because I thought they were pretty great across the park.

"We've worked extremely hard to stay in National Three and I don't think this team gets enough credit for that - people just presume that we should be winning but they should probably see how physical it is."
