Women's rugby: Carys Phillips to lead Wales against Scotland

Carys Phillips will captain Wales women against Scotland at Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday.

Phillips will lead the team in her father Rowland Phillips' first game since being appointed head coach.

The hooker, who was captain against Scotland in February, lines up in an experienced front-row completed by props Caryl Thomas and Meg York.

"We've had a very good couple of weeks in camp, so there have been some tough selections," said Rowland Phillips.

"The aim is for everyone to get some game time with a fixture against the UK Armed Forces also to come on Remembrance Day."

Wales play UK Armed Forces on Friday, 11 November.

Carys Phillips steps into the captaincy in the absence of Rachel Taylor who is injured, with the coach explaining it was a natural solution to the problem.

"The situation is Carys was captain last year against Scotland when Rachel Taylor wasn't available and it was highlighted last season that she was part of succession plan around the captaincy," said Rowland Phillips.

"So it just made sense that if you have a player in the squad who's captained the country in the squad that they can step up.

"Any awkwardness will come from outside - it's what other people would want to highlight.

"I've coached not only my daughter but my son as well - it's not a new experience, but we'll do things the right way and at the end of the day it's what's best for the team is my priority."
