Veteran Wales and British and Irish Lions prop Gethin Jenkins could make only his third Cardiff Blues appearance of 2017-18 when they go to Dragons in their Boxing Day Pro14 derby.

Blues hope the 37-year-old will be fit after calf and knee injuries.

If so, he could face Dragons loan signing Nicky Thomas, who is set for his debut at tight-head prop.

Thomas, 23, has joined Dragons on loan from Scarlets until the end of January as cover for the injured Brok Harris.

Dragons boss Bernard Jackman said of Thomas: "He started with us on Tuesday and we've done some nice scrums and he was really impressive.

"I'd describe him as an old school scrummaging tight-head and it's nice to have as many of them as you can."

Thomas joined Scarlets from Gloucester prior to the 2017-18 campaign, then went on loan to Bristol.

"Nicky went in there [Bristol] at the start of the season when their scrum was struggling and shored it up and in the Championship the scrum is a weapon," head coach Jackman added.

"With Brok injured and Leon [Brown] just coming and struggling a bit, we needed a little more depth and he certainly gives us a different type of weapon going into the next block.

"We get to try him out and when you see a guy day in, day out you get a real clear idea of what they are about... he's off contract in June so he's someone we would have a fair chance of getting if we like him."

Back-row Harrison Keddie and centre Sam Beard are close to fitness but are touch and go to figure against Blues - although they could be available for the New Year's Eve home game against Ospreys.

"We have Harrison Keddie and Sam Beard who are back in training but not contact, so the Blues might be a bit tight for them and if not Ospreys, then definitely into the first week of January we'd have one if not two back," Jackman said.
