The pressure was on Wales today, but they turned in the performance needed to beat Spain and book their place at the 2025 Rugby World Cup and WXV2.

Credit to Spain, who fought valiantly - particularly in the first half - and caused Wales real trouble with strong running.

But an inspired second-half showing from Carys Cox put the result beyond doubt with some time left to play, the Wales wing scoring three tries.

Ioan Cunningham's side can now look forward to next year's World Cup in England, but they will need to be better than they have been for the majority of 2024.

Thank you for joining us, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Wales hooker Carys Phillips on BBC Radio Wales: "The first half was obviously very tough, Spain gave us everything.

"But we came out in the second half and, to be fair, we blew them out of the water. It was class to see.

"Now we've qualified for WXV2 and the World Cup, so it's a happy camp today."

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham, speaking to S4C, said: "I'm so proud of the team for getting the win.

"It's been a long and hard season. There was pressure on the game, but we've kept the week simple.

"The second half it came together better.

"We changed a little bit and wanted to move the ball more. It was nice to see that.

"We'll keep trying to improve our game and look at who we're playing next, but it's important that they enjoy themselves now and return with their batteries recharged."

Wales captain Hannah Jones speaking to S4C said: "We're really happy, the girls have been working so hard.

"We played with confidence, and hopefully we can show that now in WXV2.

"Our forwards have been fantastic and gave us a platform to play.

"We'll get some recovery time now, but it'll be good to have the momentum going into WXV2."

We need the consistency of performance. It wasn't just a forward-dominant performance, it was a lot to do with the backs.

That's what was outstanding to me, the link between the forwards and the backs.

I just thought it was brilliant, especially the Jenny Hesketh and Carys Cox duo.

Wales flanker and player of the match Alisha Butchers on BBC Radio Wales: "It feels great, I feel like we really deserved that today.

"We worked really hard for it, I know we haven't been together that long as a group with some of us at different clubs but it's great to get a win and move on from that Six Nations.

"It's been a great build-up this week but we've shown glimpses there of what we can do when we've got the ball in our hands and we'll definitely look to kick on in WXV2."

I feel like you can ignore what I said at half-time.

There's relief, but it's more than that. It was the performance that they put on. The second half was outstanding, it was the same as the first 10 minutes of the game.

Not only did they come away with the win, they came away with a performance and I think that's almost more rewarding.

We have to give Wales praise, they succeeded in controlling the second half completely.

Some of the tries were fantastic.

When Spain scored their first try of the first half there were some worried faces around the Cardiff Arms Park, but whatever Ioan Cunningham said at half-time worked.

Spain failed to score a single point in the second half, whereas Wales notched up another 31.

That second Alisha Joyce-Butchers try really did feel like the turning point though, with the score line so close.

If that had not been given the Spanish would have grown in belief and who knows what would have happened!

Wales are going to the 2025 Rugby World Cup!

They were really made to work for it, especially in that first half, but a hat-trick of tries from Carys Cox made for a comfortable finish.

Job done for Ioan Cunningham's side after a difficult Six Nations, and they will now take part in the second tier of the WXV as well as going to next year's World Cup in England.

That was a brilliant finish by Carys Cox and from Wilkins.

She does that so well. That experience, you can see how calm she is on the ball.

I think that's the best way Wales could have hoped to have finished today.

    Carys Cox, con Lleucu George

Wales hit the half century and Carys Cox does have her hat-trick!

The Wales wing is left all alone, and Robyn Wilkins' cross-field kick is perfect!

Cox collects the kick and has the simple task of touching it down, to round off a brilliant second-half performance.

That yellow card seems a long time ago now!

And Lleucu George adds to acute conversion - the cherry on top for Wales!

Wales are really enjoying it out there now.

Carys Cox almost has her hat-trick after another brilliant attack down the left wing involving Hannah Jones.

Credit to Claudia Pena for making a second try-saving tackle of the match, tapping Cox's ankles when it looked like the Wales wing was clean through.

The chance has not completely gone for Wales, who have a lineout 10 metres from the Spanish try line.
