And just like that the wait goes on. So close yet again for England - which is becoming a constant theme under Steve Borthwick.

That famous win in 2012 remains the last victory over New Zealand on home soil.

Steve Borthwick has to learn that unless necessary, not to make changes! Smith was having his best game for England. No need to bring him off! In the last three games vs the All Blacks, the bench has negatively changed the momentum for us. Sadly, there is no sign of learning from our mistakes. That being said, we didn't take our chances and congratulations to New Zealand- they did.

Surely it's time to reduce the value of penalties or increase the value of tries. Fed up of teams relying on penalties to get anywhere near, New Zealand three tries to one - should be out of sight not scraping a win.

  5. Could Smith have nailed it?published at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

    FT: England 22-24 New Zealand

In England's last outing at Twickenham back in March, Smith landed a final-play drop-goal from a similar spot to defeat Grand Slam-chasing Ireland.

Hit the thumbs up if you think he would have done it again, and down if not.

Interestingly, Smith came off the bench against Ireland in March, with his kick closer, and also under penalty advantage.

That defeat means Steve Borthwick's side have lost five games in 2024, winning four times.

Only twice - against Argentina in their Rugby World Cup opener and against Ireland in this year's Six Nations - have Borthwick's England beaten a team ranked higher in the world.

Have your say on whether the decision to take off Marcus Smith was the right one.

If he went to full-back, would he still have taken the kicks?

The pass came too early? Ford is supposed to be an experienced international rugby player, he's supposed to be ready.... stop protecting him!

  10. Ford the wrong call?published at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

Plenty of chat around the decision to bring on George Ford. It is fair enough to say that Marcus Smith was having his best game for England, nailing everything.

It was a decision that proved costly. However, it is now Smith's 10 shirt to lose more than ever?

77 mins - Mark Tele’a try to level the game. Damian McKenzie nails extras from out wide to take two point lead.

78 mins - Anton Lienert-Brown sin-bin and penalty to England.

79 mins - George Ford hits the post with the penalty, but New Zealand knock on.

80 mins - Scrum pushed back, England go through phases and Ford misses drop-goal under major pressure.

You wonder if the pass came too early from Harry Randall? Ford didn't look too comfortable when he received it and had to readjust.

England were a tad unfortunate, and yes, played quite well, but NZ were the more dangerous looking overall. And the fine margins...it sounds strange but I kind of saw that Ford penalty miss coming despite his experience.

What's with the modern thinking changing fly-halves? If Smith was having a bad game then fine. But that substitution cost us the game.

Today was a must-win game. There's only so many times you can come close and not finish things off. They've become the nearly men of rugby and I don't know how it can get better. The coach turnover yet again is a sign things aren't right.

  16. 'Rugby is a game of fine margins'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

    FT: England 22-24 New Zealand

Speaking to TNT Sports, New Zealand number eight Ardie Savea said: "I didn't think we had that in the end. We got lucky with the penalty kick, but rugby is a game of fine margins and we will take it.

"That game could've gone either way but for us to stay in it and defend the goal-line like that, I'm very proud of the boys. England's pack were bringing line speed and they were putting big shots on us. It went back and forth but glad to get the win."

George Ford will be more upset by the missed penalty, not the drop-goal necessarily. The scrum put England under pressure and then every hit from New Zealand stopped them in their tracks.

Similar to the summer, they were so close but they haven't got the job done.

The difference. Damian McKenzie nails his kick, George Ford misses. Fine, fine margins at this level.

    FT: England 22-24 New Zealand

    Matt Dawson

It was utter chaos. All it needed was the composure from George Ford but you cannot put the blame on him.

It was a terrible pass under pressure. England had their chances and the moment they look like they want to play, they look dangerous.
