It goes to the other side and Finn Russell puts in a through the legs pass! Mapimpi is penalised for a deliberate knock on and goes to the bin.

    Breathless.

Scotland fire a shot. But it ends with a Matt Fagerson knock on in front of the posts.

It's a lovely offload from Zander Fagerson to put Duhan van der Merwe through a gap, and somehow Eben Etzebeth gets back to flatten the Scotland wing.

Scotland still motor forward before Fagerson lets it slip through his grasp as Jasper Wiese flies up to hit him.

South Africa follow it up with a scrum penalty.

    Scotland 12-19 South Africa

This game is really in the balance, and Scotland's attack has yet to really fire a shot.

That is a positive for Gregor Townsend, but there's also the fear the Springboks stop making so many mistakes and seriously click.

Scotland have a lineout just over the halfway line.

Another South Africa knockon gives Scotland a brilliant counter attacking chance. It's moved right to Blair Kinghorn, who grubbers through.

Willie Le Roux dives on the ball, and then Kinghorn dives on the full-back to give away the penalty. That's such a poor decision from the Scotland wing.

He gives the Springboks an easy out.

South Africa get a free kick at the scrum and try to wrap around the back of the Scotland defence.

Here comes the Boks bench...Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph Du Toit and the rest. Eben Etzebeth is the only starting forward left.

Amazing. Anyway, it kicks off at a maul and Etzebeth is penalised for pushing Zander Fagerson to the ground. The giant lock then wins the lineout anyway...

An easy one for Russell from right in front of the posts.

It came after a scrum penalty, which is a real fillip for Scotland at the start of this second half. It's a seven-point game.

We're back under way at Murrayfield. Can Scotland find a response?

A good start as the Boks knock on from the restart.

RG Snyman has replaced Franco Mostert in the second row for the world champions.

  20. What's a '20-minute red card'?published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    HT: Scotland 9-19 South Africa

For anyone scratching their head about Scotland still having 15 men on the pitch despite Scott Cummings' red card, let me explain.

There is a new law which is being trialled in these Autumn games in which a player can now be yellow carded, red carded, or a new 20-minute red card applies.

The latter means the offending player cannot return, but after 20 minutes they can be replaced. It's designed to punish dangerous play short of serious foul play, roughly speaking.

So Max Williamson has come off the bench to make it 15-a-side once more.
