    Scotland 0-5 South Africa

Scotland get some phase play going for the first time, with Zander Fagerson punching a hole in the South Africa defence. Finn Russell floats the ball out to Duhan van der Merwe on the wing but the giant Eben Etzebeth hauls him into touch.

  2. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Scotland 0-5 South Africa

After being flattened on the kick chase, Scotland get some respite as South Africa go off their feet at the ruck.

Scotland kick for touch and recycle the lineout, but Ben White chooses to go up the short side and gets rag dolled into touch.

It's a poor option from the scrum-half. But then Scotland pinch Bok ball from the lineout.

    It's poor defence by Scotland.

They deal with the maul so well, but then they get caught so narrow in midfield and Mapimpi holds his width.

One entry and one score for South Africa.

    Makazole Mapimpi

    Ruthless from the Boks.

With penalty advantage from the maul, fly-half Handre Pollard floats across a pinpoint kick for Mapimpi, who steams into the corner unchallenged.

The touchline conversion sails wide. What a start from the world champions.

    Scotland 0-0 South Africa

Jack Dempsey is penalised for not rolling away. That's frustrating for Scotland after a good counter ruck initially from Zander Fagerson.

Scotland's football stars, who have an international double header themselves this week, are at Murrayfield.

Could John McGinn, Andy Robertson, and Ryan Christie add to the rugby ranks?

Robertson's left peg off the tee, Christie's evasiveness out wide, and of course McGinn's famous backside speaks for itself...

  10. Scotland going to be pushed to limit - Townsendpublished at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Scotland v South Africa (16:10)

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells BBC Scotland's Sportsound: "We know we need to be close to our best in every element of the game. But above all it's effort, the effort to keep going whether we're ahead or behind. We really believe our team can score in a matter of seconds and minutes, so we know they have to work for everything today.

"We realise our pack will have to give everything they've given before in a Scotland jersey and probably a little bit more. There's a group going to have to go 80 minutes, they're prepared for that. We know what's coming and we really believe in our players."

  11. Erasmus respectful of Scotland's attackpublished at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Scotland v South Africa (16:10)

South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus has been very respectful of Scotland's threats before this match. But how fearful of Scotland are the Springboks really?

"Our reality is that we have never experienced big scores against Scotland," Erasmus said.

"We've always found it a grind, a massive arm wrestle. They're actually playing a really balanced game. They kicked a hell of a lot in the Six Nations and last week they ran a lot against Fiji.

"When we've got the ball, we know what we want to do. It's probably when they have the ball, it's how to stop those guys on the wings and the strong centres."

Only Rassie will know if they are seriously worried about Scotland. One suspects they will just worry about themselves.

Scotland's last win against South Africa came in 2010, when Dan Parks kicked them to a 21-17 win.

The Springboks have taken 15 of the last 16 meetings, including the last one 18-3 at the 2023 World Cup when they squeezed the life out of Scotland's attack.

Sione Tupulotu is a phenomenal rugby player, and a brilliant leader and personality. It would have been a huge blow if he had left.

He would have had big money offers to move elsewhere.

It's great for Glasgow fans, and for us because he's endlessly interesting.

  14. Sione's star shinespublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Scotland v South Africa (16:10)

Scotland centre Sione Tuipulotu is the man of the moment in Scottish rugby.

Arguably the form man in the world in his position, Tuipulotu has been named as Scotland captain for the autumn and has signed a new Glasgow deal after snubbing offers from England and France.

There's talk of him potentially starting for the British and Irish Lions in Australia next summer and a big display against the world's best this afternoon would only accelerate that chat.

He comes across as a gem of a guy as well.

"A lot of those games against the Springboks are lost before the whistle even gets blown," said the Glasgow centre.

"Our job is to make sure that's not us. I think that's one of our main things, that we have a free swing at the world champions. The most important thing is that we hop off that bus and be here to win.

It is a mammoth task for Scotland but they have to go out and attack South Africa. They have to have an element of control, but it suits their style of play.

  16. Can Jordan make impact?published at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Scotland v South Africa (16:10)

Glasgow fly-half Tom Jordan has been a revelation for the Warriors, and was pivotal in their United Rugby Championship title last season.

He made his Scotland debut from the bench last week against Fiji, but is now being thrown in to start at full-back amid some unfortunate injuries to others.

Skilful and abrasive, can Jordan thrive in an unfamiliar role against South Africa?

You can bet the Boks will be keen to test his aerial abilities.

  17. Boks' bench a 'worry'published at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Scotland v South Africa (16:10)

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

My big worry is when South Africa use their bench.

Their bench has World Cup winners and world class players, against Scotland's bench one or two who have yet to establish themselves, have been there a while, or in my opinion aren't good enough to be international players.

    But I've been wrong before.

  18. Boks' fearsome benchpublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

Just look at the names on that Springbok bench.

Siya Kolisi, Pieter Steph du Toit, RG Snyman, all double world cup winners and legends of the sport. That's before you even get to the rest.

Seven of them are forwards and so often we've seen Rassie Erasmus use that bench to maximum effect to win Test matches.

If the game is in the balance come 60 minutes, Scotland will have to raise their game to another level.

Tom Jordan will make his first Scotland start this afternoon against South Africa.

Star duo Finn Russell and Blair Kinghorn return, along with scrum-half Ben White, having all been unavailable for last weekend's 57-17 win over Fiji.

New Zealand-born Jordan, usually deployed at fly-half by Glasgow Warriors, impressed as a replacement full-back in that game and stays there.

Darcy Graham misses out after a concussion, with Kinghorn taking his place on the wing.

Ali Price and Adam Hastings drop out, with Jamie Dobie kept on as the back-up number nine option.
