Speaking of French momentum, here's Louis Bielle-Biarry's scintillating second try.

The wee wing was unstoppable today.

  4. 'Credit to France'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

Easterby on France's defence: "They defended well too. We got over the line and were held up. We forced a few passes and as much as you feel like you are on the front foot with the ball in hand, you have got to deal with the defence that is coming at you as well. At half-time we spoke about continuing what we were doing and working hard. Especially in the first half, we had so much territory and possession, in particular in their 22. Credit has to go to them with how they defended, and they went up the other end to score."

"They are a hard team to stop when they get momentum. They are as good as anyone when they get in behind you and are on the front foot. A large part of that is down to the collisions that we weren't able to put in place ourselves, so credit to the way they try and play the game as well."

Not the end in Dublin that the retiring trio of Cian Healy, Peter O'Mahony and Conor Murray would have wanted.

They can still end their careers on a high in Rome next week.

  6. '25-minute period in second half cost us'published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

Ireland captain Caelan Doris: "It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I thought we started well but we didn't convert, we weren't clinical enough early on.

"Even that time we were held up, we could have a bit of scoreboard pressure and things could have been different.

"We thought we were in contention at half-time, we felt confident. We started well and thought we could go on to do it but that 25-minute period in the middle of the second half was where we just weren't good enough - our collisions, our discipline.

"They can create something from nothing, with go forward ball and that's what happened two or three times in a row,"

One thing to look out is the injury to Antoine Dupont, who was forced off in the first half.

It would be a big blow to France, and his club Toulouse, if it's anything long term.

  8. Dupont injury 'a rugby incident'published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

Easterby on the refereeing performance: "We always go through a process of reflecting on the referee's performance. That is something that will be done internally and then we'll feed back. I wouldn't want to comment on that."

On Antoine Dupont's injury: "I think it's just a rugby incident. Tadhg (Beirne) cleans out someone in front of Antoine Dupont and he gets hit off the back of it. It happens, unfortunately. We have moved away and players have a real awareness now of clearing out on the lower limb of the player, which can create that type of injury, but that wasn't the case. He was securing his own ball and not making contact on Dupont. Unfortunately that happens. It's just one of those things unfortunately. It happens in the game."

  9. 'The game was gone'published at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

Easterby on Ireland's composure: "I don't know about that. We were down a man and they got themselves into a position where they took advantage of that. We had it in the first half as well, where we conceded a yellow card. Calvin's one - it happens. It could have gone as a rugby collision and not resulted in a yellow card. We certainly felt we didn't take our opportunities or put them under enough pressure. When we did it wasn't until the last 10 minutes of the game when we could score a decent number of points. But the game was gone."

Here's more from Simon Easterby on France's second try, which was cleared by the TMO: "You don't want to reflect on those things. We didn't defend well enough in our 22 but there are certain things that happen in a game, in instances like that, which are going to prevent someone (Peter O'Mahony in this case) making a tackle, or be in a position to try and stop that. All teams try and create a bit of space through the ruck and that allows the next player to pick, but it's the judgement over whether that contact on Pete close enough to the ruck to know if it was legal. It was three or four metres from the ruck, so that's something we'll reflect on and feedback to Angus Gardner and his assistant referees. The TMO came in and felt it was legal."

  11. 'We thought we could kick on'published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

Ireland head coach Simon Easterby: "It's disappointing, obviously. We felt that going in at 8-6 down at half-time we were still well in the game. We were confident if we started well, which we did, that we could kick on and make them pay in terms of our fitness and our ability to go well in second halves, which we have done in previous games in the tournament. Unfortunately, we didn't take enough of opportunities in the game in their 22 and we also conceded too easily.

On James Lowe injury: "He had a back spasm in the warm-up. He had it before a good while ago, so he knew straight away he wasn't right. Unfortunately it's part of the gig. It's disappointing for him and for us. I thought Nashy (Calvin Nash) done really well. That didn't disrupt us too much to be honest."

From an Irish point of view, you want to see the best players on the pitch of course. When Dupont went off, you sort of thought, here we go, this is a great opening for Ireland to go on and win this game, but Lucu came on and was sensational.

France in fairness to them, we'll talk a lot about their attack because they scored five tries at the Aviva but their defence was sensational.

It was a tough day for Ireland.

  16. 'France had a defensive masterclass'published at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

I think they just lacked the punch, lacked a bit of the cutting edge in the first 15 to 20 minutes when they could have gotten a score or two, and then France weathered the storm.

I have to say France had a defensive masterclass as well. Not only their ability to be able to read off but they're actually firing to the tackle. Shaun Edwards, the defensive coach, will be thrilled with that output.

To stop Ireland for scoring a try bonus point as well will that matter or not in the end who knows, but they were outstanding all over.

  17. 'Lucu is a very good player'published at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    FT: Ireland 27-42 France

France wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey, speaking to ITV: "The secret was to play the whole 80 minutes with all of the intensity that we have. We know they have a very good and fit team. I think we done a job."

On losing Dupont: "Losing Antoine was not in the strategy of the game. Max Lucu is a very good player and we didn't worry."

On his two tries: "I got good ball to play. It's my job to finish the tries and I tried to do my best."

On winning the title with a win over Scotland: "Yes, but it's if we win. It's a big, big game."

I cannot wait to go back and watch that defensive performance from France. It was an exhibition. They fully deserve the win and it sets them up to win the championship.

Here's more from Caelan Doris on ITV: "We always back our fitness, but they added something (off their bench). From our side we are disappointed with some of the contacts. That was a big point during the week that we wanted to get right but we didn't. It's disappointing.

On the retiring players: "Three legends of Irish rugby and it was extra motivation for us. We wanted them to finish their careers on a high here. We have to go and put it right next week with a big performance. That's the plan now."
