  2. Prendergast 'was on his game' - Schmidtpublished at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

Here's Joe Schmidt on Sam Prendergast: "I'd still be good friends with Richie Murphy and young Sam, he was talking about him two years ago as a real talent. It was no surprise to me. He has a great short kicking game and his long kicking game was exceptional tonight. I've seen him kick goals really well.

"He missed that first one that he'd usually knock over. When that happens to a young man it can put him off his game but I didn't notice that, unfortunately. He looked on his game. Playing in the Ireland system you always have options.

"We did isolate him a few times tonight and he did look a little bit flustered, which is unusual for a young man. He has a lot of potential, but I'm a big fan of Jack Crowley too."

  5. 'I knew they had it in them'published at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

Here's more from Joe Schmidt: "I already knew that this group of young men had it in them. It was just for them to find it and galvanise each other. I felt at times in that first half we didn't quite capitalise on some of the line breaks that we made. Max Jorgensen's try was really well worked.

"In the second half my one disappointment around the game is I felt we got quite conservative. When you do that against Ireland and you are hanging on, you've a four-point lead and you're hoping that's enough, but we tried to do that from too far out. I don't know what the territory or possession stats were but we were having to work very hard."

  6. 'I'm proud of them'published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

Australia head coach Joe Schmidt: "I was proud of the team. I thought they demonstrated a level of grit that you need if you are going to be competitive against the Lions and Ireland.

"We made them work pretty hard tonight. We would have loved to get into the mix with the win, but where we started from last November to where we are now, there is a bit more confidence in what we are delivering and a bit more connected. I'm hoping there is more growth to come."

As a loosehead prop to do that is impressive. Cian Healy has been an unbelievable servant to Ireland, Leinster and the Lions, he is very robust.

Ireland stuck to what they wanted to do, they got more control in the second half and played in the right areas. Australia were quite a hard team to break down but Ireland kept the ball well and converted well when they had to.

The work that Joe has done with that Australia side, to bring them up to a competitive level is impressive and they are only going to get better.

I was surprised they defended so well and for so long, so it is great for a game and for a Lions tour.

Here's more from Easterby on Sam Prendergast: " He has a lovely way about him. You know what some of the best 10s in Ireland have been like over the past 20 years. Sam has come in and been himself. He has a really nice way about him and he has been controlled and calm. He knows it is not going to be perfect but he does a brilliant job at getting on with things. if he makes a mistake, he moves on really quickly. That's a great trait of a great 10.

On a big 2025 as he steps in for Andy Farrell: "I'm massively excited. We have a lot to play for next year. There's so much riding on next year, not just with the Six Nations but with that thing at the end of the season that everyone wants to try and be involved in [the Lions]. It's important we give the players the best opportunity to go and do that. It's a brilliant time for us to come in. Faz [Farrell] has done a brilliant job, he will be connected to the team and we'll maybe start to evolve slightly differently."

Here's more from Simon Easterby on TNT Sports: "We naturally have to evolve. Every team has to. We'll have a good look at it. We've not a long time to look between now and the Six Nations, so it will be really fresh in our minds and we'll definitely go away and look at how we can be better with the ball."

On impact off the bench: "They [Craig Casey and Jack Crowley] were excellent. Jamo [Gibson-Park] and Sam [Prendergast] started really well but every team now has to have guys who can come on and impact the game. I think they did that. Faz [Farrell] tasked the boys today to not just fit in when they came on, but make an impact."

  15. 'Hell of a Test match'published at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

    FT: Ireland 22-19 Australia

Simon Easterby, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a hell of a Test match. Probably not for everyone but for the purist. We gave them access, we got access. It went right down to the wire and I suppose that's what we expected from a team that was coached by Joe Schmidt.

"They have got better and better over the last four or five weeks. Thankfully we came through. They defended well and put their hits in. We didn't do that in the first half and gave them a bit of momentum."

For a long time there it looked like the Wallabies might just spoil the IRFU's big birthday bash.

In the end, it's a second three-point win of the autumn for Ireland who have certainly lived on the edge at times this month.

Plenty to work on moving forward after an uneven four-game tilt but, not least with Andy Farrell switching into Lions mode, we know it'll be a different looking team when we next see them in the Six Nations.

They've talked about the seamless transition. Andy Farrell and Simon Easterby have worked together for a long time, Simon took the Emerging Ireland tour so a lot of the players will be very comfortable with him.

England first up in the Six Nations is a mouthwatering prospect but there is a lot of rugby between now and then and players will want to find form and it bodes well for a Lions year.

Really competitive and great test match. To win the game the way they have after the sloppiness in the first half, the desire to come back and win, the impact from the bench too. Australia are devastated. There will be a feeling of relief for Ireland. It was a fitting tribute that they got the job done for Cian Healy.

Here's more from Caelan Doris on TNT Sports: "I think every time you come into camp there is enjoyment. It's a dream job for all of us and there's growth in there as well. From the very first meeting it was about improving along the way. We didn't get it quite right in the first game but I think we have seen evolution over the last number of weeks and there have been some good results in there."
