Shaun Murphy, who lost 13-9 to Stephen Maguire, has been talking to the media.

Murphy fist-pumped after winning two early frames in yesterday's second session before Maguire did the same after the 16th frame, punching the table and then punching the air.

But Murphy had no problems with that and said more players should show their passion.

He said: "It's what we need more of in snooker, these shows of emotion and people celebrating. It's OK to celebrate your success, good shots and winning frames. It was a vital moment and if I had won that frame I would've punched the table as well.

"We need more of it in snooker and for players to show their passion. A lot of them look like robots. I enjoyed it, it added a bit of spice to the match."

Scotland's Stephen Maguire moved into the quarter-final thanks to a 13-9 victory over 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy.

A fired-up Maguire had built a 10-6 lead on Saturday. Murphy had earlier edged two frames on the black and responded with a fist pump, before Maguire did likewise, punching the table and then the air as he moved into a strong advantage going into the third session.

"Shaun made a mistake," said 43-year-old Maguire. "He knows me well enough and I get down on myself. He won a frame I should've won and I was sitting there hating myself when the fist pump came out and I thought 'you're having it' and all my attention went on that.

"It was satisfying beating a player as good as Shaun is in the last 16 of the World Championship."

Maguire, 28th in the world, faces England's David Gilbert, ranked 31st, in the last eight but felt he needed to improve if he was to become world champion.

"I'm still in it and I'm not going to say I've got no chance, but I'm one of the outsiders," added Maguire. "Being realistic, I still need to improve. I don't think I'm good enough. I've not played good but got two good results when I've played better and lost."

  4. O'Sullivan two ahead after first sessionpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 5-3 Day

Nope, the double's a bit of a wild one but it's a 92 to add to a couple of 80-plus breaks and a century in the opening frame when O'Sullivan cleared with a run of 123.

A very enjoyable opening session of this last-16 tie. Plenty of big breaks but plenty of mistakes from both players too.

Ryan Day might feel like he's missed a trick given the number of chances he's had against the world number one and seven-time Crucible champion but the Welshman is still in the match.

These two will be back for their second session at 19:00 BST.

Once Ronnie O'Sullivan played a couple of cannons into the pack to free more reds, the outcome of this frame was not really in doubt.

He's past the snooker requires stage, can he sign off the morning session with his second century? Up to 92 but it'll have to be a double on the last red...

He'll be really disappointed, Ryan Day - after the previous frame, just to hand this chance to his opponent.

All the scoring chances Ronnie has had in this session have been from unforced errors from Ryan Day - he's been gifted them, he's not had to work for them.

That's something Ryan is going to have a look at ahead of tonight's session, how to cut those out.

Ronnie O'Sullivan clips in a shot-to-nothing red to start frame eight.

He misses the green to follow but Ryan Day plays a very attacking shot on a red, breaking into the pack in the process, but the pot is awry. Reds everywhere and a massive chance for the world number one.

Meanwhile, Ryan Day has made one of the centuries of the tournament over on the other table.

The reds went so scrappy at the start of frame seven and most of the colours were off their spots.

But he negotiated this tricky table superbly to accumulate a 115 clearance and reduce his deficit to one frame - with just one more to come in this session.

A fully deserved victory for Stephen Maguire.

    Murphy 9-13 Maguire

Stephen Maguire on BBC Two: "Each season is getting faster and faster and results like this and being in quarter-finals again, I have to pat myself on the back and just enjoy it.

"I am trying hard to let the other guy beat me rather than beat myself."

Ronnie isn't at his imperious best. He's giving up chances - he looks good when he's in the balls but he's missing the odd one here and there.

That's why you see there's a lot of facial expressions - he's still not entirely happy with how he's playing because he's such a perfectionist and has such high standards.

Oh, Ryan, Ryan. It's easier said than done when you're playing the greatest of all time, but he's got to seize these moments.

Ronnie, at times, has looked invincible this morning but Ryan has had plenty of chances. There have been some really damaging shots to his chances in the last couple of frames, Ryan Day, when he's been right in the match.

When Ronnie realises he's not going to be punished for his mistakes, he's going to run riot, run away with the match.

Really not what Ryan Day needs at the start of frame six as Ronnie O'Sullivan flukes a red off an attempted safety shot.

The 'Rocket' races to 51 but shows his annoyance by swiping his cue in the air after missing a red to middle. He's back at the table quickly though as Day knuckles a red he'd pot 99 times out of 100.

Ryan Day had rocking a little bit, he was a bit uneasy. Those are the times you have to focus and make the most of your chances.

That frame will hurt Ryan and it will inspire Ronnie.
