  1. 'Important he keeps pressure on'published at 11:06 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-1 Day

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

It's so important he keeps this effort going and keeps the pressure on his opponent.

Make no mistake this is a very talented player you are looking at - he's made 457 century breaks in his career.

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

He should be feeling a lot more relaxed having won the previous frame. What an opportunity.

  3. Postpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-1 Day

More positive signs for Ryan Day.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is narrowly off target with a long red - it was near enough the pocket that you'd expect him to pot it 95% of the time.

But it wobbles in the jaws, stays out and Day pots another red off that one to give himself a good chance to level the match.

Claire and Darren have made their annual trip up from Surrey to Sheffield to watch the action at the Crucible, their sixth time at the iconic venue.

"We're sitting in the middle and through experience we know where to get the tickets so you can see the most," says Darren. "If you are right in the middle, in the middle four seats, you can see both sides."

The pair say one of their best memories here was when they watched the 2022 final between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump, which O'Sullivan won at the age of 46 to become the oldest Crucible champion.

Claire, who is wearing a 'Where's the cue ball going' snooker T-shirt, added: "The Crucible is about the atmosphere and the history - we love snooker. I would be gutted if it went and I know there's incentives for it to go elsewhere with the money but the legacy and the passion is here at the Crucible."

As soon as tickets go on sale for the 2025 event, on Bank Holiday Monday, the pair hope to secure their places back here for next year.

  5. 'Murphy not out of this'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 28 April

    Murphy 7-11 Maguire

    Joe Perry
Former World Championship semi-finalist on BBC Two

This is encouraging for Shaun Murphy fans. He potted some beautiful balls to win that frame. It's exactly what he needed after the first frame this morning. He's not out of this by any means.

  6. Murphy digs deep to win frame 18published at 10:58 British Summer Time 28 April

    Murphy 7-11 Maguire

Shaun Murphy finally gets a chance but the balls are not easy and he battles his way to a break of 47, including a tricky red with the rest.

It proves crucial and the former world champion reduces the gap to Maguire.

  7. 'It shows Ronnie is not infallible or unbeatable'published at 10:57 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-1 Day

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

Those errors are just evidence that as great as he is, Ronnie O'Sullivan is not infallible, he's not unbeatable.

And Ryan Day has to believe that. He has to believe in himself.

  8. Day on the boardpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-1 Day

O'Sullivan sits in his chair with a perplexed expression as Ryan Day mops up the required reds to leave him needing snookers.

The 'Rocket' heads out of the arena to perhaps give himself a stern talking-to for those uncharacteristic basic errors.

  9. Catalogue of errorspublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-0 Day

Lifeline for Ryan Day as Ronnie O'Sullivan overcuts a red that had to be played delicately, with little distance between cue ball and object ball.

But he misses a black off the spot, then soon after O'Sullivan misses a much easier red. Huge, huge chance for Day now - he has to take this opportunity.

This frame has been a catalogue of errors from both players, a sharp contrast to the perfection displayed by O'Sullivan in the previous two.

  10. 'He'd done the hard work'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 28 April

    O'Sullivan 2-0 Day

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

He'd done all the hard work, Ryan Day - and he thought 'I can win the frame now'.

But that was a horrible bit of cueing to miss that red.

    O'Sullivan 2-0 Day

Ryan Day is unlucky not to leave an easy red after breaking into the pack off the blue - but he notices two reds have formed a plant.

It's not a gimme but he makes it, rolls in a blue - and then butchers the next red badly. 35 points ahead - but that's nothing when you're playing O'Sullivan.

    Rare error from the 'Rocket'.

Goes in-off an attempted safety and leaves a long red for Ryan Day - but it's a tester.

    He strokes it in beautifully.

Ryan Day is aiming to get back into the World Championship quarter-finals for a fourth time, after losing in that round in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

He has played Ronnie O'Sullivan here before, losing 13-10 having been 9-7 ahead in their last-16 tie back in 2006.

"I was a lot younger, less experienced, only the second time I played here," said Day. "I remember being 9-7 up and I got ahead of myself and was thinking 'here's a chance to beat O'Sullivan on the biggest stage'.

"I had a free ball and miscued on the pink, jumped it and it went off in the corner pocket. From there the wheels came off. An inexperienced me at that time couldn't deal with the situation.

"This place gives you lots of great memories and lots of scars. That was certainly one of the scars. It's not physical on your skin, but it is lodged away somewhere deep in the recess of your mind

"I'm longer in the tooth now. I know I have a mountain to climb."

No consecutive centuries as Ronnie O'Sullivan overcuts a cut-back on the penultimate red and the break ends on 84.

So he remains on just the 1,262 career tons.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is rolling. He has the cue ball on a string, pots going right in the centre of the pocket.

Second frame in the bag - only question is whether he can register back-to-back centuries...

  17. Maguire extends leadpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 28 April

    Murphy 6-11 Maguire

After a scrappy start to the 17th frame, with the balls scattered around the table, Stephen Maguire finally gets some rhythm and compiles a steady 68 to extend his lead.

Great opening frame for Maguire, but worst possible start for Murphy.

Just two more frames required for the Scot.

    O'Sullivan 1-0 Day

The 'Rocket' showing he can do it all.

After that fabulous 123 clearance, he shows plenty of patience to win a safety battle with Ryan Day, leaving the Welshman with the cue ball right on baulk cushion, not far from the pocket.

It's a horrible shot for Day to have to play and, sure enough, he leaves an easy starter.

  19. 'It would be a huge blow if the snooker left Sheffield'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 28 April

Partners Cathy Soreny and Anthony Joinson have come to the Crucible as part of their 10-year anniversary celebrations and will get the full experience today as they have tickets for the morning and evening sessions, with one session on table one and one on table two.

"I've lived in Sheffield for nearly 30 years and this is my first time here for the snooker - I'm really excited," said Cathy.

"I've been to this theatre before and it's an amazing, intense atmosphere. It would be dreadful if the tournament leaves here and it's so much about the atmosphere.

"Many snooker players have moved to Sheffield to get a feeling of the place. The Crucible, snooker and Sheffield are metaphors for each other - small and friendly. The Crucible has the right feel for snooker and it would be a huge blow if it left here.

"It would leave a gap here and people would miss it and would look back and say 'those were the days'. It shouldn't leave."

  20. Maguire back at top tablepublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 28 April

    Murphy 6-10 Maguire

Stephen Maguire is a former UK Championship winner who reached a career-high ranking of second in the world - but he's never reached those heights at the Crucible.

Two semi-final appearances - in 2007 and 2012 - seem a paltry return for a player of such talent.

But he requires just three frames this morning to reach a fourth World quarter-final in eight years - and he's 50-odd points up in the first frame of the day...
