  2. Alcaraz breaks then holdspublished at 17:35 British Summer Time

    *Darderi 2-6 1-4 Alcaraz

This second set went with serve until game four, when Carlos Alcaraz broke with his fourth break point to take control.

The Spaniard won a remarkable point when he anticipated Luciano Darderi's smash at the net to return into an empty court.

Alcaraz then holds, though Darderi did manage to take him to deuce and earn himself a break point. That's positive for the Italian, given how good Alcaraz has been today.

With the exception of Wimbledon, which has thrown up some surprise winners in the past few years, the Grand Slams tend to be won by those elite players.

Raducanu's season has been very encouraging, but this is a reminder that against the very best players she comes up short. It is something she is going to have to work out over the next year or so.

  4. Postpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 6-2 Raducanu

Elena Rybakina, speaking on court after a third-round win over Emma Raducanu:

"I'm really happy with the performance. It's not easy to play against Emma, she is a tough competitor. I'm pretty happy with the way I played today and looking forward to the next match.

"Through the years, for some reason the US Open wasn't that successful for me. Hopefully this year it will change. I'm really happy to get through and hopefully I can go as far as possible."

  5. 'Rybakina will be difficult to unseat'published at 17:27 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 6-2 Raducanu

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

If Rybakina can come out and produce this kind of performance, she will be very difficult to unseat. She is having a better time of it recently, she is happy that her coach is back.

He was right to keep at her in the early part of that second set because she can go a bit astray sometimes.

She is so relaxed and difficult to read - It is a deadly combination when you don't show that you are nervous and play with so much freedom.

  6. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 6-2 Raducanu

Based on this evidence, Rybakina will be a very serious contender for the title in New York.

She thrashed world number one Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati - a build-up tournament to the American major - and that tells us quite a lot about where her game is at right now.

It was Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek who knocked Rybakina out in the semi-finals then.

The ninth seed will face another tough match next against former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.

    Annabel Croft

It was clinical from Rybakina. The way she came out of the blocks, and she was unfazed and untroubled and took control from the go.

She didn't allow Raducanu to play the way we know she can. This matchup didn't suit Raducanu, anything she put out there was more than matched and came back with interest.

    It was a sensational performance.

    Rybakina 6-1 4-2 Raducanu*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

I once had the privilege of training with Steffi Graf and she did all of her training with blokes - everything was coming at her so fast, hard and flat.

I don't know how much Raducanu trains with men, but when you see her not coping with the pace of a shot, it makes me think that all of her training has to be done with power players.

  16. Rybakina third break pointpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 4-2 Raducanu*

A rapid return from Rybakina takes us back to deuce and then sends Raducanu on the move across the baseline to earn a third break point in this game.

  17. Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 4-2 Raducanu*

Raducanu saves both break points then works her way to game point and receives a big cheer of encouragement from the crowd.

They don't want this to be over just yet. The importance of those two break points can not be overstated. But Raducanu has to hold here.

  18. Rybakina break pointspublished at 17:06 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 4-2 Raducanu*

Rybakina brings up two break points on the Raducanu serve.

This could be over pretty soon if the Brit isn't careful.

  19. Postpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 4-2 Raducanu*

Rybakina is hitting her first serve at just 46%.

That's pretty surprising given how dominant she has been here and Raducanu has not been able to take advantage of the second serves.

  20. Darderi and Alcaraz holdpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time

    *Darderi 1-4 Alcaraz

Luciano Darderi holds serve to get himself on the board - he produced a brutal forehand winner that had Carlos Alcaraz scrambling across the baseline in desperation.

Alcaraz holds to love after a thrilling rally that saw Darderi just about reach a drop shot and return a lob before his opponent smashed home a forehand winner.
