Carlos Alcaraz takes his second break point with a ridiculous return of a 98mph serve. He used the pace on the serve against Darderi and there was nothing the Italian could do about it.

Luciano Darderi double-faults for the sixth time today and Carlos Alcaraz leads two sets to love.

The Italian has really struggled with his second serve today - he's won the point on just 24% of his second serves. It's cost him again.

    *Darderi 2-6 4-5 Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz holds with an eighth ace of the day.

The Spaniard is now talking to the physio - he says he felt something in his right knee a couple of games ago.

He opts against strapping and is going to have a quick massage to see if that solves the issue.

    Medical time-out.

    Darderi 2-6 4-4 Alcaraz*

Something to keep an eye on - Carlos Alcaraz has asked the umpire to call his physio. The Spaniard appears to be flexing his leg between points.

Whatever the issue is, is doesn't stop Alcaraz from setting up two break points, but Luciano Darderi recovers for deuce.

Darderi saves a third break point with an ace, before leathering a forehand winner that Alcaraz can only deflect into the crowd.

Wimbledon champions and top seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool are OUT of the men's doubles in the first round.

The British pair have been beaten in two tie-break sets by Alexander Erler and Robert Galloway.

Neither team faced a break point in the match, let alone had their serve broken. It all came down to a couple of key points at crucial moments, which the Austrian/American pair got the better of.

Elsewhere, Britain's Luke Johnson and Dutch partner Sander Arends are through to round two in straight sets.

  9. Darderi breakspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time

    *Darderi 2-6 3-4 Alcaraz

Great defensive play from Luciano Darderi, as he reaches a drop shot before returning a lob that leads to Carlos Alcaraz returning wide.

Alcaraz then goes on the defensive with some ludicrous returns , but in the end he misses and gives Darderi two break points.

The first is wiped out with an ace, but then the Spaniard nets to let the Italian back into the set.

    Darderi 2-6 2-4 Alcaraz*

Both players are having a bit of trouble serving from the sunny side of the court - the bright sunshine is making it difficult to spot the ball when they throw it up.

No matter though, as Luciano Darderi holds serve.

It had remained on serve until the 12th game, when Kartal was broken.

  12. Alcaraz breaks then holdspublished at 17:35 British Summer Time

    *Darderi 2-6 1-4 Alcaraz

This second set went with serve until game four, when Carlos Alcaraz broke with his fourth break point to take control.

The Spaniard won a remarkable point when he anticipated Luciano Darderi's smash at the net to return into an empty court.

Alcaraz then holds, though Darderi did manage to take him to deuce and earn himself a break point. That's positive for the Italian, given how good Alcaraz has been today.

With the exception of Wimbledon, which has thrown up some surprise winners in the past few years, the Grand Slams tend to be won by those elite players.

Raducanu's season has been very encouraging, but this is a reminder that against the very best players she comes up short. It is something she is going to have to work out over the next year or so.

  14. Postpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 6-2 Raducanu

Elena Rybakina, speaking on court after a third-round win over Emma Raducanu:

"I'm really happy with the performance. It's not easy to play against Emma, she is a tough competitor. I'm pretty happy with the way I played today and looking forward to the next match.

"Through the years, for some reason the US Open wasn't that successful for me. Hopefully this year it will change. I'm really happy to get through and hopefully I can go as far as possible."

If Rybakina can come out and produce this kind of performance, she will be very difficult to unseat. She is having a better time of it recently, she is happy that her coach is back.

He was right to keep at her in the early part of that second set because she can go a bit astray sometimes.

She is so relaxed and difficult to read - It is a deadly combination when you don't show that you are nervous and play with so much freedom.

  16. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time

    Rybakina 6-1 6-2 Raducanu

Based on this evidence, Rybakina will be a very serious contender for the title in New York.

She thrashed world number one Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati - a build-up tournament to the American major - and that tells us quite a lot about where her game is at right now.

It was Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek who knocked Rybakina out in the semi-finals then.

The ninth seed will face another tough match next against former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.

    Annabel Croft

It was clinical from Rybakina. The way she came out of the blocks, and she was unfazed and untroubled and took control from the go.

She didn't allow Raducanu to play the way we know she can. This matchup didn't suit Raducanu, anything she put out there was more than matched and came back with interest.

    It was a sensational performance.

Rybakina takes the match at the first opportunity as Raducanu sends the Kazakh's second serve long.

For Raducanu, it's a bit of a humbling again against a top-10 player.

A double fault hands Raducanu a gifted point but that is the only blemish on Rybakina's record in this game so far.

    Two match points.
