Taylor Fritz ended his run of Grand Slam quarter-final disappointment by beating Alexander Zverev to reach the US Open semi-finals.

The American 12th seed had lost all four of his previous matches at this stage of a major but edged out 2020 runner-up Zverev 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3).

He roared in delight as Germany's Zverev pulled the final ball wide before holding his arms wide to take the acclaim of the crowd on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The win keeps alive Fritz's bid to become the first American men's singles champion at Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Fritz could play another American in Frances Tiafoe for a place in a first Grand Slam final.

Tiafoe meets Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in Tuesday's night session in his quarter-final.

Fritz's victory followed New Yorker Emma Navarro beating Paula Badosa to reach the semi-finals of the women's singles.

American Taylor Fritz speaking after reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final with victory over Alexander Zverev: "I feel amazing, I have had a lot of looks at quarter-finals over the last few years and today just felt different. I really felt like it was my time to go a step further, it's only fitting I'm doing it here on this court at the Open in front of this crowd."

On developing his game: "Having a big serve is helpful but at the top of the game, your serve comes back a little more. I've worked on adding so much to my game. My forehand and backhand have always been there but I've been trying to come to the net a bit, trying to mix in some drop shots, just trying to add stuff to the game so I can back up my serve a little bit better."

On facing Frances Tiafoe or Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-final: "I know the crowd would really want to see me play Frances so we get an American in the final. That could be crazy so I guess we'll see what happens but either way I'll be ready to go."

Alexander Zverev misses and New York erupts.

He embraces Zverev who yet again comes up short but this is Taylor Fritz's moment.

He laps up the cheers of the crowd and thumps his chest and his heart because it needed heart.

Zverev nets a backhand and looks skywards dejectedly. Three match points for Fritz, the first two will be on the Zverev serve though.

The Zverev first serve is only halfway up the net. An excellent 24-shot rally, with Fritz eventually getting on top and then smashing away a winner, 5-2 Fritz.

He's serving the next two points, win them both and he's through.

Another Zverev serve, another Zverev ace, 4-2 Fritz.

Another strong first serve, Zverev sends the return wide, 4-1 Fritz, three more points will do it.

But Fritz responds with an ace of his own, 3-1.

You can feel the tension on both sides, it is basically the one who is able to keep the unforced errors down in these stages of the set and the match who will still have enough willpower to play aggressive tennis and really take it to their opponent.

We go to a tie-break. Taylor Fritz was three points from victory, but Zverev saves himself.

If Fritz wins the tie-break, he wins the match and sets a new career best Slam run.

Taylor Fritz dominates a rally, wins the point and only needs three more, 0-15.

A high volley from Alexander Zverev leaves it at 30-30, with the fourth seed two points away from a break of serve. But Fritz gets two good first serves in and grabs a vital hold.

Zverev just held his serve to stay in the competition. He has to do the same again.
