It's going to be about the patience mentally for both players.

It's about having to create opportunities on second serves, getting the return back into play and trying to make that breakthrough when the opportunity is presented.

They have already had some extraordinary exchanges so far in this match, no wonder the crowd are responding as they are.

This is pretty physical. Both players are having to sprint back and forth on the angle and use all of their agility.

Their legs will be hurting with the amount of movement they have had to do in the last few points.

    Lovely, lovely tennis!

Alexander Zverev stands with his arm in the air after winning a point that had both men scrambling at one stage. Fritz had a chance with a backhand volley but didn't quite do enough.

Despite that miss, it's probably Taylor Fritz that has started the stronger. With a swish of the big forehand the game is sealed, leaving him free to stride back to his chair with purpose.

    He looks up for it.

Danger averted by, you guessed it, the Zverev first serve.

There was a scruffy miss by the American on the break point, however. It's very early but the type of backhand into the net you can come to rue.

We're going to talk about the serves a lot in this match. Both of these men stand more than 195cm tall and there serve comes from even higher than that when they reach up with a jump.

A couple of loose shots from the American take us to deuce but Fritz's powerful first dig gets him out of trouble.

It's an interesting one, this match. It is a hard one to call, there is nothing in it really.

Taylor Fritz has got a huge forehand and Alexander Zverev has a huge backhand.

It will be the little tiny margins and who executes to perfection on the dy. The crowd will be behind the American the way they were for Emma Navarro, I think they had a huge impact on the result in that match.

But Zverev is quite mentally tough in situations like that. I think he has walked into this match very mentally prepared to take on the crowd.

I think it is going to be fascinating, I can't call this one.

Alexander Zverev has dropped the opening set in three of his four matches so far in New York. Perhaps he's just the kind of guy who enjoys a lazy morning. Who can blame him?

    Fritz v Zverev

The winner of this match will play Frances Tiafoe or Grigor Dimitrov. They are two fine players but it could be worse in a Grand Slam semi-final.

Does that add its own pressure? I'll let you answer.

The warm-ups are done. It'll be the lanky Californian to serve...

Alexander Zverev has his eyes on a maiden Grand Slam title after making it through to the US Open quarter-finals.

The fourth seed, who lost in the final at Flushing Meadows in 2020 and Roland Garros earlier this year, breezed through to the last eight with a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 win over Brandon Nakashima.

And with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic already out, Zverev might just think this is his time to finally land a major title.

“I’m happy to be back in the quarter-final,” the German said. “I just need to win one more set than the last two times in the final. I am doing everything I can.

“Everything else is out of my power, I am trying my best and hopefully it is going to be enough at some point in my career.”
