It is such a fight for Boulter to deal with these slices from Maria. She cannot pitch it just right but is trying to compromise with drop shots of her own to change things up nicely.

A much more positive and self-assured game from Boulter - she is playing much better up at the net.

Maria is continuing the form we saw from her in the first set. She is choppy into every point she can be.

Boulter is not trying to go for too much but it is patient play from Maria as they begin to play slightly longer rallies.

Boulter wants to lean forward on the ball and get some pressure on it before she hits it, but she has had very little opportunity to do that whatsoever.

For team Germany, it is just more of the same. Their strategy is working perfectly.

Boulter is still just looking for a little bit of smoothness. Even when she gets close to the net, Maria is so capable of finding the angles to get the ball past her.

Maria is troubling the Boulter game and not giving her the strike she wants. She is a tough opponent to be up against. What you want is rhythm and Tatjana Maria gives you none of that.

Tatjana Maria quickly gets out to a 40-15 lead.

It's looking like a set to forget and move on from for Katie Boulter.

Oh dear. A second double fault in the game and what a time to do it, to concede the double break.

Katie Boulter up against it now, she'll have to break Tatjana Maria to stay in the set.

Harriet Dart has got a tambourine which she's putting to good use on the Great Britain bench every time Katie Boulter wins a point.

A double fault for the Brit hands Maria a 15-30 lead in the game before the German pummels a backhand across court and out of Boulter's reach to bring up two break points.

Boulter is starting to get hold of that slice. It does take some getting used to, but now she is off and running.

She played her best game so far in that fourth game but Maria is always able to come up with a tricky shot to respond.

There are certainly signs of progress for Boulter but Maria is holding firm.

Sonay Kartal has been speaking to BBC Sport after her win over Niemeier, saying: “It was a super proud moment for me, and the team on the sidelines - I couldn’t pick a better bunch of girls to do it with.

But her game was in better shape than her voice - which is suffering because of too much shouting during games’ nights.

Kartal says Jenga - a version that is “twice her height” - has become particularly competitive.

Some good serving from Katie Boulter finally gets her up and running in set one.

It's a hold to 15 for the British number one with the only blemish a forehand into the net. She seals it with a brilliant passing backhand shot.

The slice from Maria has been working well so far and is causing Boulter all sorts of problems. The ball is spinning in the opposite direction to what you want and wants to go down off your strings.

It's a great start from Maria, she knows she can get under Boulter's skin. Boulter needs some games on the board to start ramping up the pressure.

This is Katie Boulter's first match of the year on clay and she's just taking a few games to find her stride.

She does enough to draw level at 30-30 but her drop shot can only find the net before her backhand goes long and Tatjana Maria takes the hold.
