This has been a really positive start from both players.

It feels like the battle is going to be between who can dictate play with their forehand that little bit more.

There have already been plenty of long rallies, so this could get physical.

  2. Kartal break back pointspublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 12 April

    Kartal 1-2 Vedder*

It's a physical contest between these two with baseline rallies dominating so far.

Sonay Kartal brings up a couple of break-back points with a lovely backhand which drops behind Eva Vedder.

  3. Kartal holdspublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 12 April

    Better from Sonay Kartal.

She gets herself on the scoreboard with her first service hold of the match.

  4. 'Excellent start from Vedder'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 12 April

    *Kartal 0-2 Vedder

    Naomi Cavaday
Former British tennis player on BBC Red Button

Kartal is trying to bringing some variation to the rallies and is using the depth of the court which she does so well.

Even though Vedder is pushing her deep, she is able to get a really strong strike on the ball.

Both of these players enjoy using their forehand shots with shape and spin which works so nicely on the clay court. Vedder's is doing some serious damage.

  5. Vedder holdspublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 12 April

    *Kartal 0-2 Vedder

Sonay Kartal fires long and that's break point saved.

Eva Vedder eventually takes the hold after a deft backhand drop shot followed by a passing forehand winner.

  6. Kartal break pointpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 12 April

    Kartal 0-1 Vedder*

A loose Sonay Kartal forehand into the net hands Eva Vedder game point but a couple of errors from the Dutch player brings up a break point for Kartal.

  7. Postpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 12 April

    Kartal 0-1 Vedder*

Some good serving from Eva Vedder puts her in control of this latest game but Sonay Kartal stays patient and works her way back into it.

From 40-15 she draws level for deuce.

  8. 'Early pressure for Kartal'published at 13:19 British Summer Time 12 April

    Kartal 0-1 Vedder*

    Naomi Cavaday
Former British tennis player on BBC Red Button

Both players will be looking for a nice steady start and to get a few games ticked off.

There is some early pressure for Kartal. Vedder might be an underdog here, but what is an underdog in the Billie Jean King Cup? It's a very different environment.

Kartal will not be too concerned about a break of serve, she will be backing herself. She has such shot quality.

  9. Vedder breakspublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 12 April

Eva Vedder takes the break at the first time of asking.

Sonay Kartal doesn't look too phased at this point.

  10. Vedder break pointpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 12 April

    *Kartal 0-0 Vedder

Sonay Kartal drags a forehand wide and that brings up an early break point for Eva Vedder.

These two have never faced each other before and it's similar to how Kartal started against Jule Neimeier yesterday.

  11. Postpublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 12 April

    *Kartal 0-0 Vedder

Both Sonay Kartal and her opponent, Eva Vedder, beat Germany's Jule Neimeier in their first-round matches.

So this should be an interesting one.

A fuller crowd today, as expected, with the home nation in action.

    Kartal gets us started.

  12. Kartal impresses on BJK Cup debutpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 12 April

Sonay Kartal watched GB's triumph against France in last year's qualifiers from afar, having spent three months out with a health issue.

However, she has risen up the rankings in the past 12 months, clinching her first WTA title on the way.

A good mover on the clay surface, she played confidently in a first set that saw seven breaks of serve in 10 games, adjusting well to Niemeier's pace.

Kartal served for the opener at 5-3 but was broken, before two double faults from Niemeier handed the Briton the set.

Kartal reeled off five games in a row to lead by a set and a break, redirecting the German's pace around the court, before serving out victory.

"I'm super proud of that debut match," said Kartal.

"It is obviously nerve-wracking when you're the first match on, but I'm proud of my performance."

That gave GB an unassailable lead in the best-of-three tie before Germany claimed a consolation victory in the doubles, with Laura Siegemund and Anna-Lena Friedsam beating Olivia Nicholls and Harriet Dart 6-4 6-1.

That result doesn't matter right now but could come into play when deciding who progresses. The Netherlands currently have a better record having beaten Germany 3-0 on Thursday.
