Arthur Rinderknech doesn't even bother trying to reach that drop shot from Jannik Sinner. It came out of nowhere.

The world number one whips a wicked backhand across court before landing another drop shot that Rinderknech does get to this time, but he can't find the court with his lofted return.

The crowd are behind Rinderknech again after he dispatches the world number one's serve with a forehand winner.

30-30, a big point. But this is where Sinner's experience shines as he stays in a rally with top defence and waits for a Rinderknech error.

He then gets out of the service game by forcing another mistake.

Great stat from the guys on TV. A Frenchman has never beaten a world number one at Roland Garros since the rankings were first introduced in 1973.

Nobody's told Arthur Rinderknech yet. He's made a fine start, matching the Italian.

Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is in the crowd.

I'm sure there's a joke out there comparing Sinner saving three break points just now to Donnarumma keeping out Arsenal.

But currently I'm a little distracted. Both these two play at such an epic pace. There are no gaps between points.

    Sinner 2-1 Rinderknech*

Jannik Sinner wrestles back control winning the next two points to squeak to a hold.

Not bad from the world number one. He never panicked, just upped his game a little and forced an error from his opponent.

It's land of the giants on Court Phillippe Chatrier.

Jannik Sinner is already one of the loftier players on the tour at 6ft 3in. His opponent Arthur Rinderknech is even taller at 6ft 5in.

I guess you won't be surprised then to learn that both are serving very quickly. We've rattled through the first two games as Rinderknech holds to 30.

World number one Jannik Sinner will have his eyes on the prize when he gets his French Open campaign under way against France's Arthur Rinderknech this evening.

The Italian is looking to win his first title at Roland Garros and comes into the tournament in solid form, only dropping one set in reaching the Italian Open final earlier this month before being beaten by world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

Rinderknech did beat Sinner in their only other clay-court meeting back in 2021, but Sinner leads their head-to-head 2-1.
