Summary

  1. Auger-Aliassime holdspublished at 18:11 British Summer Time

    Auger-Aliassime 7-5 3-2 Rublev*

That's the most dominant game we've seen in this second set.

The Canadian holds to 15, sealing it with an emphatic ace.

His serve was so powerful that he basically continued in the direction of his chair afterwards for the switch of ends.

Good stuff from the 25th seed.

  2. Swiatek and Alexandrova on courtpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time

    Alexandrova v Swiatek

Just walking out on Louis Armstrong Stadium are 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and world number two Iga Swiatek.

Alexandrova is introduced first and looks pretty composed as she strides out into the New York sunshine.

As always, Swiatek has large headphones clamped to her ears so she might not hear the big cheer that greets the 2022 champion.

  3. 'Auger-Aliassime probing'published at 18:09 British Summer Time

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

I feel like Felix Auger-Aliassime is just probing.

Having won the first set, he just wants to keep the pressure on Andrey Rublev.

We've seen a few more times now where Rublev has reacted over points.

Auger-Aliassime will just want to keep picking at the wound.

  4. Rublev holdspublished at 18:07 British Summer Time

    *Auger-Aliassime 7-5 2-2 Rublev

Yeah, you can file that one under 'missed opportunity' for Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Andrey Rublev wins the next two points on deuce and we're back on serve.

How will the Canadian react from here?

  5. Deucepublished at 18:05 British Summer Time

    Auger-Aliassime 7-5 2-1 Rublev*

Oh, what a missed opportunity for Felix Auger-Aliassime.

At 30-30, the Canadian works a winning position by playing a drop shot and then a sensational lob, but he sends an overhead smash wide.

Thankfully for him, Rublev then sends a forehand long to go to deuce.

  6. 'Both players enjoying conditions'published at 18:00 British Summer Time

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Both these fellas are enjoying these conditions.

If it was more humid as the forecast suggested, they might have approached playing a little differently.

They might have attempted to keep points shorter and utilise their strengths earlier in the rally.

  7. Auger-Aliassime holdspublished at 17:59 British Summer Time

    Auger-Aliassime 7-5 2-1 Rublev*

This second set is really even so far, with little to separate the two players.

Felix Auger-Aliassime gets the hold to 15 but the margins are fine, with Andrey Rublev missing two forehands by a matter of inches.

  8. 'De Minaur looks good for a semi-final'published at 17:56 British Summer Time

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

I was quite concerned with the way Alex de Minaur was travelling earlier in the year, the way he lost at Roland-Garros, he spoke after and said he was losing some momentum - he seemed to be running into a wall.

But since Wimbledon, Alex seems to be traveling better than ever.

Alex is looking good for a semi-final - he'll be watching Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime bruising each other licking his lips.

  9. How US Open star became distracted by bettor fearpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport senior tennis reporter at Flushing Meadows

Angry gamblers sending vitriolic abuse to sports stars is, sadly, nothing new.

The vast majority of messages are confined to social media, but there is a fear among some players that more zealous bettors - potentially the ones who are sending the abuse - are turning up at matches.

This was clear in a peculiar incident earlier in the US Open when Leandro Riedi reported a vocal fan to the chair umpire - for cheering him on.

  10. Rublev holdspublished at 17:56 British Summer Time

    *Auger-Aliassime 7-5 1-1 Rublev

Andrey Rublev levels at 30-30, showing great footwork to get to a drop shot and then apologises to his Canadian opponent for his body-shot return.

He follows it up with a brilliant cross-court forehand winner, before Auger-Aliassime nets a return.

  11. Auger-Aliassime holdspublished at 17:51 British Summer Time

    Auger-Aliassime 7-5 1-0 Rublev*

Felix Auger-Aliassime will be a relieved man to come through the opening service game of this second set.

The Canadian's level noticeably dipped there after the break following the first set - including a double fault on his advantage.

But the 25-year-old hits a scintillating forehand winner down the line to earn another advantage and takes the hold when Rublev hits a backhand long.

  12. 'Auger-Aliassime frustrating Rublev'published at 17:49 British Summer Time

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

The more often Felix Auger-Aliassime can defend, the more the frustration builds for Andrey Rublev.

  13. Deucepublished at 17:48 British Summer Time

    *Auger-Aliassime 7-5 0-0 Rublev

Felix Auger-Aliassime saves break point and we're back to deuce.

  15. De Minaur into quarter-finalspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time

    Riedi 3-6 2-6 1-6 De Minaur

One hour and 35 minutes that took eighth seed Alex de Minaur.

Very impressive stuff from the Australian and he says he's putting himself in the right places.

He will take on the winner of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev.

  16. game, set and match

Game, set and match - De Minaurpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time

    Riedi 3-6 2-6 1-6 De Minaur

Well that is about as comfortable a round-four match as Alex de Minaur is going to get at a Grand Slam.

Leandro Riedi really dropped off in that third set and unfortunately for the qualifier it ends on a double fault.

A great couple of weeks for Riedi but things may only get better for De Minaur, who is into the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for a third time.

He has never gone further than that at a Grand Slam. Could this be his time to do so?

  17. 'Rublev needs to reset'published at 17:41 British Summer Time

    Mark Woodforde
17-time Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Andrey Rublev will be frustrated after that good start. The tension was rising.

I'm not sure what he was doing at the end of the set there, it seemed like he was looking for the ball.

He just has to move on and start to reset.

  18. De Minaur one game from quarter-finalspublished at 17:41 British Summer Time

    Riedi 3-6 2-6 1-5 De Minaur*

Leandro Riedi seems to be struggling with his leg and wow, has it affected his serve.

Alex de Minaur is racing to a very, very comfortable straight-set victory here with a double break in the bag and the Swiss qualifier struggling as he serves to stay in the match.

  19. Game and first set - Auger-Aliassimepublished at 17:40 British Summer Time

    *Auger-Aliassime 7-5 0-0 Rublev

    Oh boy. Deep breaths.

Felix Auger-Aliassime finally wins the set at that fourth time of asking.

Andrey Rublev clips the tape with a backhand, with the Canadian doing little other than getting it back over the net on his return.

But the Russian inexplicably nets his own return with a failed passing shot.

Rublev is furious with himself and takes a bathroom break, presumably to calm down.

  20. Set point Auger-Aliassimepublished at 17:37 British Summer Time

    Auger-Aliassime 6-5 Rublev*

Felix Auger-Aliassime squanders a third set point but then earns a FOURTH with a thunderous forehand winner.

Can he take it this time?!
