  2. What is happening on day eight?published at 10:37 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

We'll be leaving this live text commentary here shortly so let's have a look at what's happening when we return tomorrow.

Plenty of big names in action as defending women's champion Aryna Sabalenka takes on her friend and 14th seed Mirra Andreeva before Coco Gauff faces Belinda Bencic at the Rod Laver Arena.

Then, Jack Draper, the last Brit standing at Melbourne Park, kicks off the afternoon session with what promises to be a brilliant match against third seed Carlos Alcaraz.

The winner of that could set up a potential quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic, who faces Jiri Lehecka in the night session on Rod Laver.

  3. What has happened on day seven?published at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

The day started with a crushing loss for Emma Raducanu, who lost 6-1 6-0 to Polish second seed Iga Swiatek.

It's been a day of upsets as 38-year-old Frenchman Gael Monfils beat fourth seed Taylor Fritz before his wife, 28th seed Elina Svitolina, stunned fourth seed Jasmine Paolini.

It's been a history-making day for German lucky loser Eva Lys, who won her third-round match to become the first lucky loser to reach the last-16 of the women's singles at the Australian Open since 1988.

American qualifier, Learner Tien, 19, who pulled off the shock of the tournament in the previous round with victory over three-time finalist and fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, progressed to the fourth round with victory over France's Corentin Moutet.

There have also been wins for American eighth seed Emma Navarro, home favourite Alex de Minaur, former Australian Open finalist Elena Rybakina, American 21st seed Ben Shelton and, as we've just seen, a comfortable win for defending champion Jannik Sinner.

    Sinner 6-3 6-4 6-2 Giron

A little more from Jannik Sinner as he looks ahead to facing either Holger Rune or Miomir Kecmanovic:

"Tough match – if it’s Holger I know him slightly better. We’ve had some very tough battles in the past. If it’s Miomir it’s a bit different. We’ve played I think a couple of times. Let’s see.

"I’ll try and focus on my side, as I said try to raise my level and hopefully it’s a good match."

  5. 'I still have room to improve' - Sinnerpublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

Jannik Sinner speaking to Jim Courier on court: "First of all I’m very happy to be in the next round. Each match has its own difficulties. I felt like today he was very solid from the back of the court when he served well, especially the first serve.

"I struggle a little bit to return. I still have room to improve but every win is great, especially in these conditions.

"Thank you for the support, it’s amazing to play night sessions here and lets see what’s coming now in the next round."

    On adding to his game

"Today the percentage of my net game was not really good but I try to improve, sometimes I feel certain things are a little bit better, sometimes a bit worse but that’s normal.

"Trying to stay there mentally which is the most important aspect but for sure if I want to go on in this tournament I have to improve. I have to raise my level but I am still very happy."

    Job done.

Jannik Sinner books his place in the fourth round with a comfortable straight-sets win over Marcos Giron.

A real gulf between the two, to be honest. The defending champion had too much.

Just not enough pace and position from Giron.

That is where the Sinner camp have done the homework to focus on the Giron forehand.

We've had an upset at the Margaret Court Arena where Ukrainian 28th seed Elina Svitolina has beaten Italian fourth seed Jasmine Paolini in three sets.

Svitolina wrestled the momentum away from Paolini in the second set and the 30-year-old didn't look back, winning 2-6 6-4 6-0.

Remarkably, Svitolina's win over the fourth seed follows her husband Gael Monfils' triumph over men's fourth seed Taylor Fritz on the same court in the match before.

With the amount of court time the first two rounds – Giron’s shoes are coming off – either blisters or potential nails.

    These are terribly uncomfortable.

Looks like the tape is being applied to that second toe.
