  1. Goodbye!published at 02:06 Greenwich Mean Time

Well, that wasn't how Emma Raducanu planned it.

The fact that Iga Swiatek was out of this world might provide a small crumb of solace.

Thanks for staying up and following along (presuming most of you are in the UK) even if the result wasn't as you hoped either.

Make sure you keep across the BBC Sport website over the rest of the Australian Open.

    Ta-ra!

  2. 'Confident' Swiatek delighted with comprehensive winpublished at 02:02 Greenwich Mean Time

    Raducanu 1-6 0-6 Swiatek

With Raducanu already back in the locker room, Swiatek sticks around to have a word with the crowd.

"I just enjoyed playing," she says. Quite.

She adds: "I felt really confident and at the end I could push for even more.

"Converting all these break points was really important and I'm pleased with that performance."

That, my friends, is what we call a tough day at the office.

Emma Raducanu solemnly shakes hands with her opponent before making a sharp exit.

    A bitter pill to swallow.

Losing one and love is the joint worst defeat of Raducanu's professional career.

    There it is.

As we suspected, Iga Swiatek adds a bagel to the breadstick in a thumping win over Emma Raducanu.

One hour and 10 minutes is all it needed.

"Jazda!" screams Swiatek as another Raducanu backhand flies long.

Swiatek is cooking. It looks inevitable there will be a bagel...

  6. Swiatek breaks againpublished at 01:52 Greenwich Mean Time

    Raducanu 1-6 0-5 Swiatek*

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport in Melbourne

Swiatek does initially show mercy. Raducanu gets on top of a rally to save the break point and moves a point away from the hold.

But she quickly loses her way again.

A double fault on a second break point is a sorry way to hand over Swiatek's third break of the second set.

Not everyone is hoping Raducanu can get on the board in this second set.

"No mercy!" shouts one bloodthirsty Polish fan.

That comes as Raducanu toils again at 30-30.

A poor overhead into the net, which demonstrates the Brit's confidence levels, hands over another break point...

Raducanu's backhand has been unusually poor today. Eleven of her 20 unforced errors have come off that side.

More contribute to a comfortable hold for Swiatek, who is able to recover from throwing in a double fault.

The big question now is: can Raducanu avoid the bagel?

The serving stats for Raducanu are ugly.

The British number two has landed 53% of her first serves and won 25% of her second serve points.

Swiatek has taken four of her 10 break points.

  10. Swiatek secures double breakpublished at 01:40 Greenwich Mean Time

    Raducanu 1-6 0-3 Swiatek*

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport in Melbourne

The Melbourne crowd is doing its best to gee up Raducanu.

Cries of 'Come on Emma!' puncture the calm but they can't help the Brit.

A double fault is an ominous start and another break point goes Swiatek's way when Raducanu goes long off the backhand side.

If Raducanu doesn't break back here, you'd guess it could be curtains rather quickly.

Swiatek spices things up with a double fault for 15-15, only for Raducanu's backhand to let her down again.

That's the invitation which Swiatek needs. She sticks her foot on the gas with winners off both flanks to hold.

Three times Raducanu gets to game point in deuce.

Three times she can't get over the line.

Her resistance buckles on another break point for Swiatek, overcooking a forehand which flies way past the baseline.

That 10-minute game illustrates how much work Raducanu is having to do.

Swiatek's intensity is a different level.

    Jonathan Jurejko

Hang on! Let's not write Raducanu off completely just yet.

The world number 61 builds confidence with a forehand winner on break point which even the athletic Swiatek can't retrieve.

Then Raducanu gets on top of the rally to save the other...

Raducanu is looking a tad listless out there, I'm afraid to say.

A double fault is met with pity before Swiatek paints another line and creates two more break points...

So, Raducanu has been cooked in Iga's bakery.

The breadstick is better than the bagel at least. Small mercies.

Can the British number two escape the oven in the second set?

  16. Game and first set Swiatekpublished at 01:18 Greenwich Mean Time

    Raducanu 1-6 Swiatek

    Jonathan Jurejko

Well, that escalated quickly. Once Swiatek gets an inch she takes a mile.

The second seed wraps up a one-sided first set with a hold to 15 and jogs menacingly back to her chair.

Raducanu's serve, as we suspected, was pummelled as Swiatek took two of her five break points.

  17. Swiatek breaks againpublished at 01:15 Greenwich Mean Time

    Raducanu 1-5 Swiatek*

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport in Melbourne

A nearby British groan is followed by a gulp as Raducanu dumps a forehand into the net for 0-15.

She recovers well, though, with a forehand winner and a meaty first serve to move 30-15 ahead, before Swiatek laces a winner for 30-30.

Raducanu closes in on a much-needed hold but wait there... Swiatek forces deuce.

A short rally ends in Raducanu hitting a tentative backhand into the net. Another break point to the Pole...

Swiatek gobbles up the second serve and the Brit's backhand lets down again.

Swiatek is too just too good for Raducanu at the moment.

Too much power, too much athleticism.

"Wow," is the reaction of one guy behind the media seats as Swiatek wallops another winner to consolidate the break.

    Raducanu 1-3 Swiatek*

    Jonathan Jurejko

Another Raducanu service game, another whole world of trouble for the Brit.

Swiatek swamps her to tee up three break points.

After saving one, a weak volley does not test Swiatek enough and the five-time major champion picks off the Brit with a passing crosscourt backhand winner.

    Uh oh.

How's it got to the first sit-down and I've not even asked for your thumbs? How remiss.

Up for Raducanu. Down for Swiatek.

    Heads not hearts please.
