Well that was part luck and part brilliance from Marcos Giron to save break point.

He sticks out a hopeful racquet as Jannik Sinner's forehand is heading for the back corner of the court and it drops just over the net and Sinner can't get there.

A couple of good serves get Giron out of trouble to take the hold.

Marcos Giron starts his service game well with an ace but as soon as he has to engage with Jannik Sinner in a rally the Italian just simply has the better of him.

The defending champion is dictating the points from the baseline and he has a chance to go a double break up here.

If I was [Giron's] coach I would be showing him the match that Sinner played against Tristan Schoolkate. Marcos Giron has much more experience than the young Australian.

Tactically, he should get to the net. He’s got good speed, a handy serve and he's not shy about volleying.

He has a pretty solid attitude.

  13. Sinner break pointspublished at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

    Sinner 1-0 Giron*

Defending champion Jannik Sinner gets out to 30-0 but a double fault to miss setting up game point gives Marcos Giron a little opening.

Sinner nails the smash volley then finds a crunching first serve which Giron can only skew off his racquet.

  16. 'Sinner has taken his tennis to new heights'published at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

    Sinner v Giron

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds

Sinner is just very cool and calm. You don’t know what’s really going on psychologically. You can’t really read him but oh my goodness, does he bring the level of tennis when he turns up.

He’s a phenomenal player and ball-striker. His tennis has been unbelievable in the last 12 months and he’s taken it to new heights. He’s pretty impressive.

    Here come the players.

These two have faced each other just the once before with Jannik Sinner coming out on top.

Marcos Giron is coming off the back of a gruelling five-setter and will be playing on Rod Laver for the first time.

What do we think people? Sinner in straights?

Will Marcos Giron be able to capitalise on Jannik Sinner's uncharacteristically shaky start?

The world number one didn't exactly make things easy for himself in his first and second round matches on Rod Laver Arena and, unsurprisingly, the big stages awaits him once again.

Sinner squeaked past Nicolas Jarry 7-6 7-6 6-1 in his opening match and then made hard work of his second round encounter with Tristan Schoolkate, dropping the first set but going on to win three sets on the bounce to claim a 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3 victory.

  20. Sinner continues title defence against Gironpublished at 07:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

Jannik Sinner will be hoping to extend his unbeaten run at Melbourne Park and continue his title defence in his third round tie against Marcos Giron.

The only previous meeting between the pair came at the Shanghai Masters in 2023, with the current world number one beating Giron in straight sets.

Giron, who is currently ranked 46th in the world, has already recorded his best-ever Australian Open campaign this year, having previously failed to make it beyond the tournament's first round.
