These are conditions that play more into Zheng's natural skillset. The forehand has a little bit more spin, which is aided by the clay, and the backhand still cuts through.

    Gets it!

Zheng Qinwen strikes first in this women's quarter-final as she finds another winner to complete an excellent game. What a start this is by the 22-year-old.

Fortune favours the brave - Zheng stepped in and rifled that forehand winner.

Impressive returning from Zheng Qinwen, who shifts the pressure back on to Aryna Sabalenka.

What a winner that is! A clean forehand beats the world number one and it's the eighth seed who will have the first two break points...

That's where Zheng will be very pleased. If they're going backhand to backhand, my money is with her. It's the forehand battle where she will have real trouble.

    *Sabalenka 1-1 Zheng

Zheng Qinwen is cruising to an opening hold after crashing in an ace for 40-0, but then a couple of misses by the Chinese eighth seed invites pressure.

A tense 16-shot rally unfolds on her third game point but Zheng holds her nerve and gets on the board as Sabalenka is eventually forced into the net.

It's a bright day - I feel Sabalenka is going to get enough out of her first strike to keep the game on her forehand and dictate the first strike.

That was a little nervy start from Sabalenka, a few unforced errors, but then she settled herself down.

Well, that opening game certainly hints at the close contest many expect to unfold here.

We know how aggressive Aryna Sabalenka likes to be and the world number one looks to assert herself in her opening game, but is perhaps too eager as a couple of errors help Zheng Qinwen stay with her at 30-30.

Sabalenka manages to serve her way out of trouble, but she's already been made well aware that she'll have to work hard for every game.

I've got to think Zheng Qinwen is the slight favourite, even though she's ranked lower. She won the Olympic gold here and psychologically, that match in Rome, even though Sabalenka wasn't at her best, makes it more difficult for the world number one.

Got to agree with Greg. What a match to get the quarter-final action under way.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been in red-hot form and is yet to lose a set this year at Roland Garros.

Zheng Qinwen won Olympic gold here last summer and has the confidence boost provided by finally ending her losing streak against Sabalenka last month.

I'm going for Sabalenka in a very competitive three sets.

Aryna Sabalenka has won six of the seven matches she has played against Zheng Qinwen.

That includes each of their first six encounters, losing just a single set during that dominant run.

But Zheng won their most recent meeting - and first on clay - at the Italian Open 6-4 6-3 last month.

The singles quarter-finals will begin very shortly on Court Philippe Chatrier.

First up, women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka takes on Chinese eighth seed Zheng Qinwen.

That's followed by Ukraine's Elina Svitolina against defending champion Iga Swiatek.

The first of the men's last-eight matches see Italy's Lorenzo Musetti face American Frances Tiafoe, before defending champion Carlos Alcaraz meets American Tommy Paul.

Elsewhere, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski bid for a place in the men's doubles semi-finals against Australians Matthew Ebden and John Peers, as does fellow Briton Henry Patten competing alongside Finland's Harri Heliovaara.

Skupski will later return to partner American Desirae Krawczyk in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles.
