Both players doing a pretty good job so far of imposing themselves when on serve.
Kokkinakis 4-4 Draper*
Thanasi Kokkinakis, having just seen Jack Draper serve to love, then does likewise minutes afterwards. Tight and tense. Draper still has not had a chance to break, with Kokkinakis missing his two opportunities earlier on. Looks like a tie-break to settle the opener.
*Kokkinakis 3-4 Draper
The 9,500 at the AO Arena in Manchester are enjoying a closely-fought encounter to start off today's action.
British captain Leon Smith has a chat with Draper at the changeover, just after the Briton held his serve to love for the second successive game. Smith will surely be delighted with how the debutant has done so far. Still on serve in the opener.
A break for Draper in the next game would then see him serving for the set.

Funny moment when Kokkinakis considers challenging a line call.
"Are you sure you want to do that?!" asks chair umpire Nico Helwerth.
That's his polite way of telling the Aussie that he'd be completely wasting his time.
Kokkinakis laughs, Helwerth laughs and so do many of the fans.
Unlike the recent US Open, which uses automated electronic line calling, we're back to human eyes and minds here.
Kokkinakis 3-3 Draper*
A brilliant two-handed cross-court backhand winner from deep from Jack Draper gives him 0-30 on the Kokkinakis serve and his first glimmer of a chance of a break.
But Kokkinakis, at the net, unleashes a blistering forehand winner, with Draper then looping a shot long and wide from the baseline as the Australian gets himself out of trouble.

Making your Davis Cup debut is full emotion. There's a lot of excitement and a huge amount of pride.
Anxiety as well that you have to put to the back of your mind. Until you get out there and do it, there's always some uncertainty.
*Kokkinakis 2-3 Draper
Jack Draper may well have been feeling some nerves on his Davis Cup debut but that turnaround to save two break points in his previous service game has clearly lifted him and his serve is then in great form with a hold to love, completed with a bullet of an ace.

These two teams have good depth. They've got opportunities to win all three matches.
Kokkinakis 2-2 Draper*
We've had 20 minutes of action and Kokkinakis has held his serve reasonably comfortably, with Draper having to work much harder to keep things level.
A Kokkinakis ace right in the corner sees him hold to love.

A hefty serve is one of Jack Draper's key strengths and it digs him out of a hole there.
The Brit lands three first serves in a row to batter down Kokkinakis's defence.
The partisan crowd - many decked in red, white and blue - roar their appreciation.

*Kokkinakis 1-2 Draper
The first break point was saved as Kokkinakis went long but a Draper double fault gives the Australian another chance. But an excellent sliding serve out wide sees off the threat.
Great variety from Draper, whose next serve is down the middle but swings away from Kokkinakis for an ace.
The Briton then holds, saving two break points to do so.
Kokkinakis 1-1 Draper*
Just like his opening service game, Draper is under pressure with Kokkinakis getting a couple of points early on.
Draper tries to mix things up by dashing forwards, it works the first time with the Australian sending a backhand into the net, but a missed smash from Draper brings about the first break point of the afternoon, 30-40.

It's a big call from captain Leon Smith to go with Jack Draper and Dan Evans. You're leaving out your highest ranked player in Cam Norrie and also former world number one Andy Murray.
Kokkinakis 1-1 Draper*
Jack Draper has been as high as 38th in the world, but, even at the age of 21, has already had to battle a number of injuries.
He missed out on Wimbledon earlier this year as a result, but showed his class in New York earlier this month, reaching the fourth round of the US Open and going one round better than his 2022 effort.
He takes a couple of points off the Kokkinakis serve, but is unable to keep a forehand in play when stretching to give the Australian a hold to 30.

In the city synonymous with the bucket hat - the 1990s Madchester vibe which has had a modern revival - there is perhaps no surprise the fans turning up today can get their hands on a Union Jack version.
An enterprising merch seller has pitched up on the side of the main road outside the arena.
As well as the bucket hats, you can get scarves in each nation’s colours, hand-held flags or an Aussie bobble hat.
Not cold enough for one of those on a glorious autumn’s day in Manchester.

That's really where Draper is more comfortable, once the rally gets under way. If he grows in confidence then he might take a little more risk.
That [hold] will feel really good for him, especially with the nature of that final point. Draper really relaxed into the game and he'll be skipping round with the lead now.
*Kokkinakis 0-1 Draper
Britain's Jack Draper instantly finds himself 0-30 down in his opening service game, but responds well by winning the next four points in a row, giving those home fans with British flags in their hands the chance to wave them gleefully.
