    *Zverev 0-0 Alcaraz

Alcaraz balloons his return out of court before Zverev also goes wide for deuce.

What a shot from Alcaraz to bring up a break point, he advances into the net and somehow pulls off a backhand volley to the other side of the court.

    *Zverev 0-0 Alcaraz

Zverev quickly changes his racquet and he's in business with a much better serve before Alcaraz sends one wide for 30-30.

Isn't that extraordinary after everything we said about Zverev overcoming the fragility on his serve?

Well. That is not how to start a Grand Slam final. Back-to-back double faults.

Zverev has some early nerves to get rid of, it seems.

I feel like this is going to go the distance but I'm slightly favouring Alcaraz. He needs to serve well today.

    Here. We. Go!

Alexander Zverev and then Carlos Alcaraz walk up the stairs to Court Philippe Chatrier, striding out confidently and waving to all corners of the stadium.

It is the first final between two men looking for the maiden French Open title since 2016.

It is also the first final between two men playing their first Roland Garros finals since 2005.

Well done to Giles, Chris Mckeon, GT, Patricio Serra, Helen Pearson, Alex and Akiko Hickey for getting the answer to our quiz question right!

The 2004 French Open winner was Argentine Gaston Gaudio.

He came from two sets down to beat compatriot Guillermo Coria 0-6 3-6 6-4 6-1 8-6.

Well done to those who got it right!

Over much of the past two decades, there has been a football-style atmosphere outside Chatrier before the men's singles final kicked off.

Spanish fans wearing Seleccion replica shirts, daubed in yellow and red face-paint, national flags wrapped around their waists, have turned out in force.

That was the Rafael Nadal effect.

Not quite as vibrant as a home World Cup game at the Bernabeu today, but still expecting a lot of vocal support for Carlos Alcaraz inside once the action starts.

Carlos Alcaraz had to face Jannik Sinner, who is going to be the world number one, in that semi-final and he had to come through five sets.

That would have been a very emotionally demanding match, but it will also gives him enormous confidence to bounce into this final.

As you know, there will be a new French Open men's singles champion crowned today.

Le Quotiden, which is Roland Garros' daily newspaper, goes with a simple message to the two players on the front...

    'Write history."

    Greg Rusedski

Physically, Alexander Zverev is the strongest he has ever been.

So I'm not doubting his physicality even though he's spent almost 20 hours on court.

What do we think then, folks?

Will it be Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev?

Hit the thumbs. Up for Alcaraz, down for Zverev.

    Oooooh!!

An excited exclamation goes up as five Patrouille de France jets - the acrobatic aerial unit which you could describe as France's Red Arrows - loudly whizz over Chatrier.

They were so quick I couldn't get my phone out in time to snap them.

I did manage to get the red, white and blue Tricolore trails hanging under the fluffy clouds - but that's not as impressive a sight.

Alexander Zverev is the Olympic men's singles champion and, with less than 50 days to Paris 2024, the city where the German will defend his title is shaping up nicely.

Venues are being built around the Eiffel Tower and Trocadero - two of the busiest tourist spots in the city.

Between the two iconic spots, you can see a mini-arena being built for spectators to watch the climax of the triathlon, road cycling and athletics - marathon and 20km race walk - events.

A couple of days later, you could see the five Olympic rings - having being lifted into place by cranes onto the iconic wrought-iron structure - glowing in the evening sun.

    Paris

And L'Hotel de Ville - the neo-renaissance style city hall built in 1871 - has also been kitted out.

It has been the focal point of Olympics celebrations in each edition of the Games, and is already kitted out for the home leg.

    Zverev v Alcaraz

Now 27, it may come as a shock that Alexander Zverev is yet to win a Grand Slam title.

The German is into just his second major final having lost the first one in a five-set thriller to Dominic Thiem at the US Open in 2020.

Zverev, however, won the Olympic gold medal in the men's singles at the Tokyo games the following year. He has also claimed two ATP Finals victories.
