  1. What does the future hold for Salah?published at 10:34 25 April

    Everton 2-0 Liverpool

    Sky Sports

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher speaking to Sky Sports about Reds forward Mohamed Salah: "He's Liverpool's goalscorer - and he's gone off the boil. What that's done has shone a light on the others a bit more.

"I've said before that, at the back, maybe Virgil van Dijk has been getting people out of trouble. But with the front three, the others aren't as clinical as what we've seen before, or as Mo Salah.

"I think there should be a real discussion with the new manager about what the future holds for Mo Salah. He's only got a year to go on his contract."

The Reds rejected a £150m offer from Al-Ittihad last summer so will the Saudi Pro League club come back in for the Egypt forward, who turns 32 in June?

Fascinating end to the season isn’t it? But once again the threat comes from Man City. Six games to go and a potential 91 points if they win all their games. However, such is the unpredictability of the PL this season that it will only take a slip up from City and for Arsenal or Liverpool to win their remaining games for all the predictions to be turned on their heads. It’s really all to close to call, but win our remaining four matches and we’re still in with a shout. City will drop points somewhere along the line.

For the record, Opta still has Manchester City in pole position, as they will claim a record fourth consecutive title if they win all their remaining matches.

  5. When can Premier League relegation be decided?published at 10:16 25 April

Mathematically, no club has been handed their fate just yet, but with Everton holding an eight-point buffer over 18th-placed Luton Town, another season in the Premier League - and with that one step closer to taking the keys to the brand new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock - looks to be safe and sound.

Sheffield United, however, will be relegated to the Championship if they lose to Newcastle on Saturday. That game is a 15:00 BST kick off at St James' Park.

Liverpool lost this title the moment they had two key players leave in Firmino & Mane - two outstanding players who scored and assisted goals in abundance. These two were always going to be difficult to replace.

  7. 'Klopp probably feels like the players let themselves down'published at 10:01 25 April

    Everton 2-0 Liverpool

    Sky Sports

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge speaking to Sky Sports about Jurgen Klopp's reaction: "You could see that he was deflated. He seemed as if he analysed the performance now, being in it. He probably feels like the players let themselves down, with how big the game was for them.

"He talked about the set-piece [that Everton scored from], that they knew about it and had prepared for it but [Everton] still managed to score from it.

"That's when you are really disappointed. As a coach, when you've set your team up to be in a particular style, that 'we want to stop this', and when you see it come to light you're thinking 'lads, we prepared for that'."

Back into the top four and a domestic trophy, I think all Liverpool fans would have taken that this time last year. We’ve done well to scrap and stay in the mix this season but looks like it will be a stretch too far. It won’t cloud what has been an incredible period under Klopp’s leadership.

  9. Back to basics for Nunez?published at 09:49 25 April

Darwin Nunez scores against BrentfordImage source, Getty Images

Cast your minds back to February and Darwin Nunez scoring an outrageous opener against Brentford, chipping goalkeeper Mark Flekken to put Liverpool a goal up in the first half.

Former Reds striker Michael Owen tweeted his appreciation of the Uruguayan's effort but also offered this piece of advice: "Learning to slot, dink or go round the GK is a far more productive way to score and will increase his chances to 4 or 5 in 10, thus massively increasing his end return."

Last night against Everton the simple option evaded Nunez once again and what should have been an equaliser for Liverpool in a crucial Merseyside derby turned out to be a blasted shot straight at keeper Jordan Pickford. Cue the 'you're just a less good Andy Carroll' chant from fans inside Goodison Park.

If Nunez stays at Liverpool, will it be possible for the new manager/coaching staff to teach him the basics? Or is it a case of, you either have it, or you don't?

  10. Could penultimate week be pivotal in PL title race?published at 09:43 25 April

A couple of things stand out when assessing the respective fixtures of each of the three title challengers - Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City:

    1. Tottenham, who are still chasing fourth place and qualification for next season's Champions League, have to play all three. Could they be the kingmakers? Potentially, but that brings us on to point number two...

    2. With all three title challengers at home on the final day of the season, whoever is top going into those games will hold all the aces. Getting over the line is never easy, but the real challenge for all three sides could lie in the penultimate week of the title race, when fixture changes for televised matches have thrown up a potentially mouth-watering finale to the season:

    • Saturday, 11 May - Fulham v Man City
    • Sunday, 12 May - Man Utd v Arsenal
    • Monday, 13 May - Aston Villa v Liverpool
    • Tuesday, 14 May - Tottenham v Man City

Both teams came into this match looking for their third win in a row but Eddie Howe's side never really looked like winning this one.

Newcastle had just one shot on target though Isak could have done better when played through on the Palace goal in the first half.

Newcastle may also feel they should have had a penalty after Longstaff went down in the box after Hughes' challenge but overall they did not create enough chances to trouble the Eagles.

They face bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Saturday and will hope to bounce back to the form that saw them pick up 10 points from four games prior to this setback as they seek to secure European football for next season.

Liverpool have done amazing to be in the title race considering how many chances we have created/not scored as well as conceding so many sloppy goals all season. The two Man United games are what have cost us - confidence was lost and it’s so hard to get it back. You can't keep conceding the first goal and expect to win games. Jota being missing for large periods has really hurt us too.

  13. 'I think Liverpool have actually overperformed this season'published at 09:28 25 April

    Everton 2-0 Liverpool

    Sky Sports

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher speaking to Sky Sports about the title race: "Manchester City are on a different level to Liverpool this season. I think Arsenal have just got the edge on Liverpool as well.

"In the last six to eight weeks, I think from Liverpool's point of view [winning the title] has almost been a hope rather than a belief. I don't feel, this season from August to now, that I've been watching a title-winning team, and in some ways, I think this team has actually overachieved because I don't actually think they're that good.

"I don't mean that as a criticism, I think they've done brilliantly well, but because it's Klopp's last season it almost felt like 'you've got to do this because this is the end'. If Klopp was staying for another two or three years, this would be seen as a great building block to build on.

"I'm gutted they lost tonight but I'm finding it hard to be too critical because I think they've actually overperformed this season. It's not about what happened here [at Everton] or the Manchester United game, when it's come to the crunch, they've just been a little bit short."

  14. Should Liverpool cash in on Nunez?published at 09:22 25 April

Whoever comes in after Jurgen Klopp - Arne Slot, probably - will have some big decisions to make as to the direction Liverpool take, especially up front, next season.

Darwin Nunez has been frustratingly loved by the Anfield crowd so far since his £85m arrival from Benfica in 2022, but would now be the time to wave goodbye to the striker and look to cash in?

Head down to the 08:05 entry to have your say via the thumbs.

At the last check, the 'cash in' thumbs have it, while 671 of you think Nunez deserves another season at Liverpool.

Title dream over? Given last season and the revamping of our midfield, I'd have been happy with a top-4 finish, but when you factor in the injuries we've had and the fact that we've had to come from behind in far too many games this season, we are incredibly fortunate to be where we are right now. Every team has bad games in a season. True champions win more of those than they lose though, and right now it feels like we're not winning those games. It's been an incredible ride, thank you Jürgen 🙏

Since Oliver Glasner has been in charge of Crystal Palace, it can be argued that no player has improved more than Mateta, scoring eight times since the Austrian took charge in February.

The manager praised the forward before this match for his work rate and the manner in which his runs create space for the likes of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, but it is his finishing which has seen him go to a different level in recent weeks.

He has scored seven goals in his last seven appearances and his tally of 11 league goals is his best since signing for Palace. He has also managed four assists across his 20 Premier League starts.

Mateta is set to have talks to extend his contract as the season heads towards its close and there is no doubt that Palace will be keen to keep him after this impressive run of form.

The corner flag at Selhurst Park last night wouldn't have minded getting a kicking from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Mateta's double - his 10th and 11th of the campaign - and Palace's third win a row books the club's place in the Premier League for another season. Relegation fears be gone.

Newcastle had their best chance when Alexander Isak was sent through on goal in the first half but Dean Henderson raced out of the Palace goal to smother the shot.

The Magpies also thought they should have had a penalty late in the second half when Sean Longstaff went down after a challenge from Will Hughes but after a VAR check, nothing was given.

3rd or 4th is probably where Liverpool are really at, but the numerous late winners earlier in the season raised expectations that are beyond this squad. Shame as it's the hope that kills you!

  19. Blades went toe-to-toe with Man Utd - Wilderpublished at 09:00 25 April

    Man Utd 4-2 Sheff Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder praises his side for keeping pace with Manchester United for 80 minutes, before the hosts went in front through Bruno Fernandes' second goal and a late effort by Rasmus Hojlund.

The Blades remain adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table and will be relegated if they lose at Newcastle on Saturday. A draw, and they would effectively still be down because of their vastly inferior goal difference.
