Speaking on Match of the Day, Micah Richards picked out Bruno Fernandes’ “intelligent” movement - running in behind defenders against Sheffield United, as well as his passing and “exquisite” finishing.

“Seven goals in his last six league games, 10 Premier League goals this season – their top scorer, 15 goals in all competitions. He really is a proper player.”

Danny Murphy added: “Fernandes’ best quality, which all the top players have, is his bravery to continually try to create things for his team when others are hiding.

“He’s a wonderful technician; his histrionics can be a little bit frustrating to say the least. To be brutally honest, with his quality, if he’d have been in a team with Klopp or Guardiola the last few years, maybe he wouldn’t have the same histrionics because he wouldn’t be getting so frustrated with the quality of players around him. He shows up, his durability is great, he’s done really well.”

Gary Lineker: "Not for the first time this season Bruno Fernandes saved Man United’s bacon and keeps them in contention for sixth place – exciting time!"

Micah Richards: "All the chaos that surrounds Manchester United, for a player to keep his composure and able to perform at the level that is needed, is fantastic."

"Fernandes created nine chances (one assist) against Sheffield United. No player has managed more in a single game this season. Creative genius."

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes led from the front to ensure another chaotic performance eventually ended in victory against relegation-threatened Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

With the visitors taking the lead twice, Erik ten Hag's side were staring at a humiliating loss to a side who have won just three times this season.

But Fernandes levelled from the penalty spot before driving Manchester United in front from 25 yards nine minutes from time.

The Portuguese created a first goal since February for striker Rasmus Hojlund four minutes later to move his side up to sixth spot and earn praise from his manager.

"He showed his leadership," said Ten Hag. "He tried to encourage the team and he is also in good form. We put him in the right position and when he is there, he makes the right decisions.

"He can create a lot, score, assist and make key actions. We are very happy with his performance and his attitude."

  7. Will there be a final slip in the title race?published at 08:30 25 April

Jurgen Klopp conceded both Manchester City and Arsenal "must have a very bad moment" if Liverpool are still to be in with a chance of winning the Premier League, but where would a potential slip-up take place?

So, Wayne Rooney observed Everton looked like they wanted it more, and after that damaging defeat across Stanley Park, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk questioned his side's desire to win the Premier League.

"Do they really want to win the league?" asked Van Dijk on Sky Sports.

Interesting he didn't use the word "we".

The centre-back continued: ""If you play like this overall in the game and not win any challenges and give the referee an opportunity to give a free-kick away then we have no chance to win the title.

"Very disappointed in so many ways. Everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their own performance and think if they gave everything.

"It is a tough one and obviously we have to do better against a side near the relegation [positions].

"If you play like today we have no chance to consider ourselves in the title race."

Wayne Rooney was a guest on Sky Sports last night, watching on as his boyhood club clobbered Liverpool with a title race body blow.

"It's amazing. At this club you have moments where you look round at the end of the game and no one has left their seat," said Rooney. "It is a massive win and Liverpool looked a bit shell-shocked.

"You very rarely say this about a Jurgen Klopp team, but Everton looked like they wanted it more."

  10. 'Brilliant performance from start to finish'published at 08:14 25 April

The atmosphere inside Goodison Park was electric and Everton fan Les Roberts, from the 'Blue Room' podcast told 5 Live Breakfast after a bruising campaign, this was a result the whole club get celebrate together.

"It’s been a rough old season with points deductions, the worst win-less run for years. And that defeat with Chelsea (6-0 at Stamford Bridge over a week ago)… I felt like there was no coming back from that.

"Going into last night I wasn’t confident, I never am going into these games. But it was just a brilliant performance start to finish. We don’t often play Liverpool off the park, we don’t often come out of a derby and think ‘they didn’t really touch us’, but last night we did. Full credit to the players and the managers and the fans as well."

  11. McBurnie groin injury scare for Sheffield Unitedpublished at 08:10 25 April

Sheffield United's relegation fate could be sealed at Newcastle on Saturday.

However, star striker Oli McBurnie's season might already be over.

The Blades' top Premier League scorer missed last night's defeat at Manchester United with a groin injury.

Manager Chris Wilder confirmed afterwards McBurnie was due to have a scan.

If the worst news is realised, it will almost certainly bring the Scotland international's season to a premature end.

Now, Darwin Nunez isn't solely to blame for Liverpool's lack of firepower, but the Uruguayan has come under the spotlight for his chaotic nature in front of goal.

Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, had this to say about the 24-year-old's golden opportunity in the first half: "The chance that Nunez misses before half-time, that is unforgivable at this level."

After 33 goals in 92 appearances for Liverpool, should the club be looking to cash in on Nunez this summer?

"I think there is a question to ask," Carragher added. "You want him to do well because there is so much that you like because he gives everything, he runs and causes trouble and gets the odd goal and gets an assist.

"But after two years when Liverpool this season are going to the title and those big games, you need your man to score away at Old Trafford, away at Goodison, in the European game at Atalanta. There is no time to waste, this is not October or November. This is the business end."

Left thumb for cash in, right thumb for give him another season.

Liverpool's front three of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all had chances to score last night - Nunez with arguably the best opportunity to pull Liverpool level when he blasted his shot at Jordan Pickford, so how does Jurgen Klopp solve his striker issues with only a handful of games to go?

On the lack of goals, the Reds boss said: "I'm responsible for that and I know that, I feel that. I've never been able to put the ball over the line in my life. I'm not angry about that. It's crazy the amount of chances we have created in the last four games. There's room for improvement."

  14. 'General performance was very good'published at 07:52 25 April

Sean Dyche can breathe a small sigh of relief now, as Everton are surely safe from the threat of relegation.

"Tricky game against top opposition, but to give the people that is pleasing for all of us," Dyche told Match of the Day.

"They care and we care, we made that clear as a collective.

"A clean sheet and some big saves from Jordan Pickford, but we created enough chances ourselves. But, there was energy and the commitment to the cause.

"I thought the general performance was very good.

"I don't understand the depth of this derby as I am not from round here, but I am learning quickly."

Liverpool's players trooped off with heads bowed at the final whistle, some nursing grievances with the officials but the frustration was surely more the knowledge that this might be a decisive night in their title challenge.

They cannot be written off, of course, but Liverpool suddenly look like a side out of energy and ideas, with even the normally reliable Mohamed Salah misfiring all night.

It made for a miserable derby farewell for manager Jurgen Klopp, who says it is never easy at Goodison Park - and it has never been tougher than this.

Liverpool are now three points behind leaders Arsenal but the Gunners have a vastly superior goal difference which is like the cushion of an extra point.

It felt like Liverpool had walked into a trap at Goodison Park as Everton turned on the power to rattle their arch rivals in a manner rarely seen in these fixtures in recent years. Liverpool had their chances but Everton would not be moved.

On nights like this, and when Everton actually respond to the atmosphere, Goodison Park is a very unforgiving environment and Liverpool came up short in too many areas.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have defied the odds before but the manner in which they played, and in which they made their retreat at the final whistle, made it clear what damage this defeat has done.

To give you an idea of how long Everton have waited for a home derby win, in 2010, David Moyes was manager of the Toffees, Roy Hodgson was in the opposition dugout, Tim Cahill and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta scored and Liverpool had the likes of Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Paul Konchesky in their starting line-up.

The threat of relegation has loomed over Everton for some time but after disappointing results and points deductions, the Toffees had a moment to savour thanks to an outstanding win against Liverpool in Jurgen Klopp's final Merseyside derby.

Jarrad Branthwaite's first-half goal and a towering header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the break gave Everton their first derby win at home since October 2010.

Everton are now eight points clear of the drop zone with four games to go.
