John Lewis boss on recent boost to shopping figures

John Lewis managing director Andy Street has told BBC Breakfast that the recent growth in shopping is "probably an indicator of how people feel they're going to be in the future".

Retail sales grew faster between July and September than at any point since early 2008 - but wages are not keeping pace with inflation.

However, Mr Street said it did not look like people were getting into debt to fund their acquisitions and he denied that websites were killing off the high street: "Two-thirds of our customers are using both shops and online to make their purchases."
