Kelvin MacKenzie on the treatment of The Sun versus The Guardian

Former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie has told the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics that if the Sun had got the story about the Millie Dowler deletions wrong (as the Guardian did), it would have come very close to being shut down.

The Metropolitan Police has already told the Leveson Inquiry it had no evidence that journalists deleted messages on the phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

The allegation that News of the World journalists deleted the messages first appeared in the Guardian newspaper and was a turning point in the hacking affair, contributing to the NoW's closure and the establishment of the inquiry.
