Millions of servicemen from across western Europe lived, fought and died in the muddy trenches of Belgium during World War One.

As the Great War's 100th anniversary approaches, people have been asked to delve into their family histories and share their War memories with the world, as part of the EU's "Europeana 1914-1918" project to preserve their real stories.

One of them is Stuart Cockerill who has recently put the memories of both his grandfathers, Edward Tindall and George Cockerill, online, giving their personal story a global audience. Both served in WWI and WWII in the same regiments.

After sharing his memories with the research team at the In Flanders Fields Museum in Belgium, Stuart Cockerill and his family went to look for the battlefield where only 200 out of 1,000 British soldiers survived, his grandfather being one of them.
