Tuition fees: David Blunkett recalls introduction
The introduction of £1,000 student fees under a Labour government caused protests and the costs of higher education have continued to rise under the coalition.
David Blunkett, who oversaw their introduction, recalled how Tony Blair and Gordon Brown got "cold feet" over the reaction from parents - as he looked at the effect of the fees then and today.
Daily Politics' David Thompson spoke to the former education secretary and to Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK.
