Liberal Democrats fuel tax controversies ahead of Budget

The Liberal Democrats have taken the unusual step of going public about one of the key choices at the heart of the government's budget - what to do about the 50p top rate of income tax.

There has been growing pressure on the Chancellor George Osborne to scrap the tax, but Business Secretary Vince Cable has said that the Lib Dems would want to replace it with a '''mansion tax'' on very expensive homes.
