Sarah Teather MP: 'Benefits cap will hit workers'

The coalition government has urged MPs to back a 1% cap on annual rises in working-age benefits and some tax credits, arguing it is vital to cutting the deficit.

But some Liberal Democrat MPs have spoken out against the plans, including the former Children's Minister Sarah Teather.

Speaking in the House of Commons, she argued that many of those who would feel the impact of the bill were not unemployed, but low-paid workers who were "already bumping along the bottom of the poverty threshold".
