UK security services scrutinised by MPs and public

Experts say Britain's intelligence services are among the most secretive in the democratic world, but there is scrutiny of their work by politicians, and some of it might be open to the public within a year.

Surveillance is a key weapon in keeping people safe, but there is a debate about the balance of security of the state and the privacy of the individual.

David Thompson spoke to Jamie Bartlett, head of the Violence and Extremism Programme at Demos, and to Intelligence and Security Committee member Hazel Blears MP, who explained its work and why some of it will be soon be heard in public.
