Theresa May defends web data powers for police plan

A law compelling firms to give police data linking devices to users would be of limited scope, the home secretary has said.

Theresa May's Anti-Terrorism and Security Bill, aimed at improving national security, would force firms to hand details to police identifying who was using a computer or mobile phone at a given time.

She told The Andrew Marr Show that to "fully identify" everybody of interest, police would need the power to access communication data - as proposed in the since scrapped Communication Data Bill, which was dubbed a snooper's charter by critics.
