Grangemouth: 'Unite were naive'
Workers at the Grangemouth refinery and petrochemical plant in Scotland will probably learn on Friday if the owners will agree to re-open the site, the Unite union having accepted a restructuring plan which it had previously thrown out.
Hundreds of jobs are threatened immediately with closure with thousands more at risk - first in the chemical plant and almost certainly in the refinery too.
The Scottish and UK governments working in recent days to produce a compromise, aware that if Grangemouth were to go the Scottish economy would suffer a huge blow with effects that would spear south across the border with England.
The Today programme's James Naughtie spent the day in Grangemouth and heard that workers thought Unite the union had "pulled the trigger too early".
One man said the union's decision was naive.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 25 October 2013.
