Slaves who died in 1794 shipwreck remembered

A ceremony has taken place in South Africa to remember the slaves who died when a ship transporting them from Mozambique to Brazil sank close to Cape Town in 1794.

The ship, the Sao Jose, has recently been discovered as part of an international project that hopes to use slave ship wrecks to shed new light on the transatlantic slave trade and the people involved in it.

Objects retrieved from the Sao Jose have now gone on display at the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum in Cape Town while other artefacts from the ship are to be loaned to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the US.
