    Caroline Nokes has been re-elected as the MP for Romsey & Southampton North, with a decreased majority.

    The Conservative candidate beat Liberal Democrat Craig Fletcher by 10,872 votes, 7,174 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

    Claire Ransom of the Labour Party came third and UKIP's Geoff Bentley came fourth.

    Voter turnout was up by 0.7 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 51,000 people, roughly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    One of the four candidates, Geoff Bentley (UKIP) lost his £500 deposit after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    The newly re-elected Conservative MP for the Isle of Wiight Bob Seely has been speaking after the count in Newport.

    He secured 41,815 votes - up by 4.9% on 2017. Labour were in second, with the Greens beaten into third place, despite the Lib Dems candidate standing aside.

    "When people on the doorstep say 'Bob we know you’re doing a good job' … I really appreciate it.

    "It's about making sure the island gets to the front of the queue and it is why I stood for parliament in the first place," he said.

    He also dismissed suggestions of supporting a bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

    “If the money was there and people wanted it, we’d try and get the cash ... but people have a very mixed opinion about whether they want it, and I want to deliver realistic things I can deliver now to improve quality of life for folks on the island," he added,
