I’ve covered numerous general elections but I’ve never seen so many journalists in Winchester as here tonight – literally 20 or 30 journalists and six cameras - people clearly think Winchester is going to be an interesting one.

We've had the historic fight between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats – Steve Brine won it for the Conservatives in 2017 with a 10,000 majority but how it rolls tonight, no-one really knows – it’s going to be a tight race.

  17. 'Somber mood at Oxford East count'published at 02:17 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    Nathan Briant
    BBC South Online

There is a very somber mood at St Aldate's Church in Oxford.

Votes aren't usually counted here but Oxford City Council, which is managing the count, hired Oxford Town Hall out tonight for a corporate Christmas do. Once the election was called, it was too late to cancel it.

There are far fewer Labour activists than normal for elections and their candidate Anneliese Dodds has spent a long time chatting to Lib Dem candidate Alistair Fernie.

Conservatives - who haven't won a council seat in Oxford for more than 20 years - are pleased with the result nationally but know they won't win here tonight. A 23,284 majority will be too big for the party to overturn in a seat where most of Oxford's industry is based.
