I actually can't breath right now. To all the nominees you're all incredible. I read an article by Sir Ian McKellen saying no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. If this the case, even if this isn't the case, I'd like to dedicate this to all the LGBT community around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together one day.

This film was born from watching our kids grow up which is not easy - anyone at junior high or high school working it out, or suffering - there are going to be days when you're going to be sad, you're going to feel angry, you're going to be scared. That's nothing you can choose - but you can make stuff. Make films - draw, write it'll make a world of difference.

Jenny Beavan, once again wearing a leather-look jacket and trousers, was keen to address the controversy that followed her Bafta win and outfit choice after Stephen Fry called her a "bag lady".

"I don't do frocks and I absolutely don't do heels, I simply can't wear them as I have a bad back, and I look ridiculous in a beautiful gown," she said.

"It's my homage to Mad Max and I didn't get it quite right at the Baftas obviously, the scarf was supposed to be an oily rag.

"I am actually in Marks and Spencer, but unfortunately I had a shoe malfunction and the glitter fell off one shoe."

She added: "I like feeling comfortable, and I'm sorry, as far as I'm concerned I'm pretty dressed up.

"And also to my friends at Peta, [the jacket] it's fake."
