Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway needn't feel too bad - they join the company of many others who've accidentally named the wrong winner at an event.

    Nine epic awards fails

La La Land is wrongly given the best picture Oscars, but it is not the first jaw-dropping award fail.

Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

"Man I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say," said best actor winner Casey Affleck.

How about this, which he said at the Independent Spirit Awards just one day earlier: "The policies of this administration are abhorrent and they will not last. They're really un-American."

We were told this would be a political Oscars in reaction to the current, tumultuous political climate.

But none of the acting winners went near the subject. What happened? Did they chicken out?

Or did they realise that preaching would have done little to change minds and would have just alienated half the country?

Jimmy Kimmel has just been on ABC News in the US explaining what he thinks happened:

    Quote Message

I know the envelope Warren Beatty had said 'outstanding female actor' on it, it did, I saw that on the internet, somebody zoomed in...

He went on to explain that Warren Beatty's delay in announcing the winner was more because the actor was confused rather than because he was trying to keep everybody in suspense...

    Quote Message

He was confused because the card, which he showed to me by the way, said 'Emma Stone, La La Land' on it. So this was confusing obviously, we thought he was being coy and cute to make everybody suffer but in reality he was perplexed by why her name was on it.

Moonlight's Mahershala Ali kicked off the night by winning best supporting actor.

At that point, we had no idea how the night would end... He has just said:

    Quote Message

La La Land has done so well and resonated with so many people, especially in this time when people need a sense of buoyancy in their life and need some hope and light, so that film has really impacted people in a very different way than Moonlight.

    Quote Message

So when their name was read I wasn’t surprised and really happy for them. And then when I did see security or people coming out on stage and their moment was being disrupted in some way I got really worried.

    Quote Message

And then when they said ‘Moonlight you guys have won’, it just threw me a bit – more than a bit – because I didn’t want to go up there and take something from somebody. And It’s very hard to take joy from a moment like that. But I feel very fortunate for all of us to walk away with best picture.

  14. More from Moonlight director Barry Jenkinspublished at 06:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Quote Message

The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane. I don’t think my life could be changed any more dramatically than it has in the last 20 or 30 minutes.

He was then asked in the Oscars press room whether he had been given an explanation.

    Quote Message

No explanation. It just happened. I will say I saw two cards, so things just happen, you know? I wanted to see the card. To see the card. And Warren [Beatty] refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. So he showed it to me, and I felt better about what happened. I will say the folks from La La Land were so gracious. I can’t imagine being in their position and having to do that.

  15. Moonlight director responds to mix-uppublished at 06:14 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Ian Youngs
Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

Barry Jenkins has just spoken about how he felt when La La Land was announced as best picture - and then when he realised his film had actually won.

    Quote Message

I think all the movies that were nominated were worthy. So I accepted the result. I applauded with everyone else. I noticed the commotion that was happening. I thought something strange had occurred. And then I’m sure you guys saw my face but I was speechless. I’ve watched the Academy Awards and I’ve never seen that happen before. It made a special feeling even more special but not in the way I expected.

    Could this be an explanation?

It appears Warren Beatty didn't just have the wrong card, he was given the envelope for the entirely wrong category...

  20. Emma Stone congratulates Moonlightpublished at 05:54 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    "Phew! You guys see that?"

Those were La La Land star Emma Stone's first words on coming backstage after winning best actress.

    Quote Message

"God I love Moonlight so much. I’m so excited for Moonlight. Of course it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land and I would love to win best picture. But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it is one of the best films of all time.

She added: "Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time?" Pause. "Cool! It's going to be history."

    Fair play.
