Hope the La La Land bandwagon starts soon, Fantastic Beasts for Costume was just weird...

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the next couple of awards in sound editing and sound mixing. If La La Land doesn't win in either it won't break the Oscar records it was tipped to achieve.

The record number of wins in Oscar history is 11 (Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Ben-Hur). The record for a musical is 10 (West Side Story).

Johnson, in turn, introduces Lin-Manuel Miranda and 16-year-old Auli'i Cravalho - the star of Moana - for another best song nominee performance, singing How Far I'll Go.

    Quote Message

I wanna thank my teachers and professors, I had so many wonderful teachers, and one thing they consistently told me was that it's not about you, it's about these characters. You're a servant, you're in service to these stories and these characters.

    Quote Message

I'm so blessed to have had an opportunity. It was such a wonderful experience, thank you [director] Barry Jenkins, thank you Tarell Alvin McCraney [writer of the play Moonlight was based on]. I also want to thank my wife, we just had our daughter four days ago, so I just want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process and really carrying me through it all. Thank you, peace and blessings.

    • Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
    • Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water
    • Lucas Hedges - Manchester by the Sea
    • Dev Patel - Lion
    • Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals

    Oscars backstage view

This is what the red carpet looks like from the next building, which is normally a shopping centre.

You walk through it from the red carpet to the backstage press room, where I am now.

At a quick estimate, there are 250 members of the world's media here, sitting at long desks, all in tuxedos and ballgowns.

The only slight hitch is that on the way from the red carpet to the press room, the sole on my right shoe somehow started coming away and is now barely attached. These shoes are so old - I never wear them because I'm hardly ever this smart.

Luckily the Oscars dress code police haven't noticed yet. I bet this never happens to Ryan Gosling.

Jimmy Kimmel jokes the ceremony is being watched by "220 countries that now hate us".

"People keep telling me it's time to bring people together, time to unite us, let me say something straight off the top, I can't do that. There's only one Braveheart in this room and he's not going to do that either."

Spotting Mel Gibson in the audience, he added "Mel you look great, I think the Scientology is working."

Warming to his political theme, Kimmel added: "I want to say thank you to President Trump, remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist?"

On a more positive note, he said: "If every person took a minute to reach out to one person you disagree with and have a positive conversation we can make America great again - it starts with us."

Moving to this year's best picture nominees, he says this was the year that "black people saved Nasa and white people saved jazz" - references to Hidden Figures and La La Land.

He topped off mentioning the best picture nominees by adding: "Manchester By The Sea, that was a fun movie wasn't it?"

  19. Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologuepublished at 01:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

Host Jimmy Kimmel  takes to the stage, joking: "Oh good I got a sitting ovation, awesome!"

Coming off the back of Timberlake's performance, he added: "Justin was terrific and I want to say I really hope the other guys from NSync were watching that performance because if they were I think there's a really good chance they're going to let you back in the band."

  20. The fans are making some noisepublished at 01:32 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Oscars fans

Every few seconds, a cheer goes up from the fans in the bleachers on the main strip of the red carpet. At the end I can see, there's a group of US service personnel in uniform, who are having the time of their lives.

Each cheer means another A lister is about to come around the corner.

We've had Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Dev Patel (with his mum), Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, Mel Gibson and many more come, wait in line for the photogtaphers, chatting among themselves, before walking forward and posing for a minute or two each.

And in the background is a voice over the public address system telling everybody to take their seats.

    Here we go!...
