  4. Our favourite moments so far tonightpublished at 04:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

Here are just a couple of highlights from the ceremony so far.

First off, the glorious moment when Jimmy Kimmel recreated a Lion King scene with Sunny Pawar.

And then when Denzel Washington 'married' a couple from the tour bus who found themselves unwittingly at the centre of the ceremony.

  5. Best original song: City of Stars - La La Landpublished at 04:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

Justin Hurwitz has barely had time to sit down from his previous trophy for best score. He collects this one along with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Pasek thanked his mum for letting him quit playing football and join a school musical instead.

    Quote Message

This is dedicated to all the kids that sing in the rain and all the mums that let them.

Justin thanked his "best friend" Damien Chazelle, who directed La La Land.

    Quote Message

I’m so glad I met you. Thanks to the LA musicians who worked on the film. I just put notes on the page - they’re the ones who made it sound beautiful.

Is it just me or are we still waiting for this Oscars to get going, two and a half hours in?

Jimmy Kimmel's had some very smart and funny moments, and there has been an undercurrent of political disquiet.

But no major stars have stuck their necks on the line over politics, no film has emerged as the big winner and there have been no huge upsets.

Perhaps that will all change - we're getting to the main awards now.

La La Land is impressively underwhelming in every category.  I am looking forward to very few wins for this trite film.

  11. Mixed messages lead to awkward moments backstagepublished at 04:07 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Ian Youngs
Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

In the backstage press room, it helps if you are able to listen to two different things at once.

Journalists can listen to the euphoric winners who come in to answer questions straight after stepping off stage. Or we can listen to the ceremony itself on headsets. Or both.

This set-up can lead to some awkward situations. When Asghar Farhadi's representatives were explaining the best foreign film winner's decision to stay away, they looked puzzled at why their words were being met by laughs from the press.

The laughs came from the media people who were wearing headsets and watching the main ceremony on screens, when unwitting tourists were brought into the auditorium - the funniest moment so far.

Jimmy Kimmel just did a special edition of his popular Mean Tweets feature from his talk show.

He pre-recorded several of tonight's nominees reading out real insulting messages they received on Twitter. Here's just one of them:

  14. Oscars bend the rules for Farhadipublished at 03:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Ian Youngs
Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

The Oscars don't normally allow winners to send other people to accept awards on their behalf.

Other people are normally allowed to collect awards only when the winners are unable to attend. Like when they're dead.

The Academy obviously decided to extend this to best foreign film winner Asghar Farhadi, who stayed at home in Iran following Donald Trump's attempted travel ban, even if he could actually have come.

Iranian-American astronaut Anousheh Ansari accepted the award in his place and said backstage that Mr Farhadi's decision to stay away was "very difficult", and "a big deal".

Ex-Nasa scientist Firouz Naderi, who joined her, added: "When you want to stand on your principles, you have to make hard choices."

  15. Postpublished at 03:53 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

We now have a first-hand account of that tour bus full of people who unwittingly found themselves in the auditorium of the Oscars a little earlier tonight.

Keith Urban has tweeted this video from the front row:

Khalid Farah, the main subject of The White Helmets - the Syrian first responders who risk their lives to rescue victims from frequent airstrikes - was unable to attend the ceremony, but sent a statement.

    Quote Message

We’re so grateful that this film has highlighted our work to the world. Our organisation is guided by a verse from the Koran - “to save one life is to save all of humanity". We have saved more than 82,000 civilian lives. I invite anyone here who hears me to work on the side of life, to stop the bloodshed in Syria and around the world.

Jimmy Kimmel just spoke to eight-year-old Sunny Pawar, who he'd spotted in the audience.

The young actor stars in Lion, but Kimmel appeared to mistake the film for The Lion King, as he hoisted Sunny up in the air.
