Cue much surprise, selfies, hand shaking and rubbing of Mahershala Ali's Oscar.

Anousheh Ansari reads out a statement on behalf of The Salesman director Asghar Farhadi.

The statement makes reference to President Trump's recent ban of immigrants travelling to the US from seven countries, including Iran.

    Quote Message

"It's a great honour to be receiving this valuable award for the second time. I'm sorry I'm not with you tonight, my absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six countries who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans immigrants from seven countries to the US.

It's unlikely to be the last political statement of the night.

Receiving a standing ovation from the crowd as she accepts the Oscar from Mark Rylance, an emotional Viola Davis said:

    Quote Message

There’s one place where all the people with the greatest potential are gathered and that’s the graveyard. I say exhume those bodies - exhume the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those come to fruition. People who fell in love and lost. We’re the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.

    She also thanked her parents:

    Quote Message

Thank you for teaching me how to fail, how to love, how to hold an award, how to lose – I’m so thankful that God chose you to bring me into this world.

  19. Not a sweep for La La Land thenpublished at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Ian Youngs
Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

We've had the first indications of how the night will go for La La Land, and the signs aren't positive.

It lost both sound categories, which is a surprise. It was pre-show favourite in one of them - sound mixing. But that went to Hacksaw Ridge. And it also lost costume design.

So it can now win a maximum of 10 awards from 14 nominations. Double figures would be a good result - but it's highly unlikely to hit that mark.

  20. Stand by for best supporting actresspublished at 02:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

Another big category coming up after the break. Viola Davis is by far the favourite here but it wouldn't be totally impossible for Naomie Harris to cause an upset...

    • Viola Davis - Fences
    • Naomie Harris - Moonlight
    • Nicole Kidman - Lion
    • Octavia Spencer - Hidden Figures
    • Michelle Williams - Manchester by the Sea
