    Although some football fans may be disappointed at today's match cancellations, for homeless charities in Birmingham there has been an upside.

    Aston Villa Football Club has donated over 700 packed lunches - originally intended for football fans and staff - to local charities.

    Guy Rippon, head of fundraising and community partnerships at the Aston Villa Foundation charity, said: "We had about 750 lunches, including sandwiches, crisps and pieces of fruit prepared and we didn't want them to go to waste just because the game was cancelled."

  2. Funds offer for snow-hit Scottish councilspublished at 13:28 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2018

    The Scottish government has opened an emergency funding scheme for local authorities dealing with disruptions caused by the weather.

    The Bellwin Scheme was opened after the Scottish Borders Council requested help.

    It was last used in 2015 to repair flood damage in the Borders and Aberdeenshire.

    Finance Secretary Derek Mackay said the Scottish government was committed to helping local councils "deal with any immediate and unforeseen costs resulting from the recent heavy snowfalls and ongoing cold weather."

  3. Northern Ireland weather warning extendedpublished at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2018

    Snow is continuing to affect the greater Belfast area and parts of County Down, while a yellow weather warning for ice for Northern Ireland has been extended until 11:00 GMT on Sunday.

    There is continued disruption on the roads and some flights at Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport have been cancelled.

    Three of Saturday's Irish Cup quarter-finals have been postponed.

  4. Volunteers 'save lives' in snow-hit Somersetpublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2018

    At least 10 lives were saved by volunteers deployed in Somerset to help people stranded overnight in snow, according to rescue co-ordinators.

    Among them were four people whose car was completely buried in a snow drift on the Mendips and two hill-walkers who had to be rescued from Exmoor.

    Duncan Massey of Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue said the people would "certainly have perished".

    Police warned that roads remained "treacherous".

    British Transport Police have been less than impressed with Friday night's incident in Lewisham, south London, which saw major rail hold-ups when a frustrated passenger on one train press the emergency button and get off, followed by others.

    A statement issued on Saturday said: "Whilst we totally understand it isn't pleasant being trapped on a train, you are far safer on board.

    "Self-evacuating from trains is never a good idea as it places you and others at significant risk. You are risking your life trespassing on live tracks."
