ScotRail has urged travellers to check journey times, as the network is facing challenges due to the freezing temperatures.

In a series of tweets, it said that snow was drifting on to tracks because of high winds of up to 40mph.

The sub zero temperatures are also causing trains and tunnels to be covered in ice.

ScotRail says that local roads are "impassable", resulting in staff shortages as people are not able to make it in to the stations.

Police were called to Lewisham in south-east London on Friday evening as passengers, who'd been stuck on a train for two hours, forced open the doors and climbed onto the tracks.

Brian Tancock was a passenger on the train behind, which lost its power about an hour after being forced to stop.

    Quote Message

The lights totally went out on our train so... we were then sat in total darkness for two to three hours while we were waiting. The conductor walking through the train, literally, the passengers knew more than he did. It took a very, very long time and everything was backed-up all the way into London. Literally, no train passed us the whole time we were stopped. Nothing went in. Nothing went out."

  20. 'North-south split' next weekpublished at 05:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2018

There could be a north-south split in the weather outlook next week, according to Paul Gunderson, chief meteorologist at the Met Office.

He said: "There will continue to be a risk of rain, sleet and snow at times.

"The less cold air means there will be a gradual thaw, but this will freeze again overnight so ice is likely to be an additional overnight hazard together with low cloud and fog.

"Colder conditions will continue in the north, with snow showers, although less heavy and less frequent than of late."
