    A key railway bridge for routes between North and East Yorkshire has reopened.

    Selby Swing Bridge had been closed to trains, but water levels have since dropped.

    Northern Rail said lines were still blocked, external between Selby and Brough, with rail replacement services running.

    Jan Schumer, from Croston, says residents of the Lancashire village are "very resilient" as they continue to clean-up following recent flooding.

    "People here help wherever they can," he said. 

    "They help neighbours and strangers alike. They are absolutely fabulous."

  4. York's Foss Barrier: Four pumps now workingpublished at 10:14

    Four pumps are now working at the Foss Barrier in York, with river levels currently dropping. 

    An RAF Chinook helicopter was used to airlift equipment needed for urgent repairs to the barrier yesterday.

    The Environment Agency said four pumps are still out of action, with the military continuing to help with repair work.

    The barrier prevents flood water from the River Ouse backing up the River Foss.

  5. Charity raises £300,000 for Lancashire flood victimspublished at 10:09

    An independent charity which launched an appeal to help flood victims in Lancashire says it's now raised more than £300,000.

    The Community Foundation for Lancashire says money has already been distributed to about 1,000 people who need help replacing goods in uninsured properties and paying transport costs to and from temporary accommodation.

  7. Weather warnings in placepublished at 09:59

    The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings, external - meaning "be prepared" - for rain in Strathclyde; Central, Tayside and Fife; Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and Borders; and north west England for Wednesday.

    There are also yellow weather warnings - meaning "be aware" - for rain for the rest of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, north east England and Yorkshire and Humber.

    The Environment Agency is trying to make temporary repairs to the River Douglas in Croston.

    Clare Dinnis says: "We are using incredibly large sandbags to shore up that defence to make sure it's able to cope with the rain that's coming and we're working with police and fire and rescue and with the military.

    "We're also working with the community to make sure they are prepared for what's coming."  

    The village,which lies south of Preston in Lancashire, was hit by flooding during Storm Eva at the weekend.

  10. 'Help people rebuild their lives'published at 09:24

    The Lower Broughton area of Salford in Greater Manchester was badly hit in the floods on 26 December.

    Lee Sugden, chief executive of the Salix Homes housing association, said: "Sadly, many people don't have contents insurance and that's one of our main priorities now as we move from the emergency phase - when we make sure everybody is safe - to the recovery phase.

    "We take care of the fabric of the building, but the contents are down to the tenant. Having said that we're going to see what we can do to help people rebuild their lives." 

  11. Flooded Lancashire pub 'having new year party'published at 09:17

    Helen Stephenson, from the Grapes Pub in Croston, says flooding won't put off new year celebrations.

    She said: "We came downstairs a few days ago to see the carpet floating above the floorboards. 

    "We stood on it and it sank and we were standing in a puddle, but we've now got the fire going, the heating on and we're having a new year party to end all new year parties."

    A bridge in West Yorkshire has been closed after a partial collapse.

    Emergency services were called out to Elland Bridge in Elland in the early hours of the morning. 

    The route is likely to be closed for the "foreseeable future", police said.

  15. Church left in a 'stinking, rotten mess'published at 08:44

    St Mary's Church in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, was badly affected when the floodwaters rose on 26 December.

    Vicar Carol Hayden said: "It was utter chaos - I hadn't realised how high the water had gone - up to the high altar, on to the alabaster stone. Everything is covered in a silty, stinking, rotten mess.

    "As soon as the insurers have been down we can have a look and start the big clean-up, which is going to take a long, long time."

  17. 'Concerning level of rain' expected in Cumbriapublished at 08:30

    Between 60 to 90 mm of rain is expected in Cumbria on Wednesday, according to Ben Lukey, from the Environment Agency.

    He tells us that is a "a concerning level of rain" and they "expect to issue warnings".

    There are nine severe flood warnings, external - meaning "danger to life" - in England and Wales, mostly centred on York which was badly hit by flooding on Saturday.

    David Cameron has defended government spending on flood defences after the devastation across northern England.
