Police are warning drivers in Norfolk not to go out unless absolutely necessary as conditions on roads continue to be treacherous.

Many of the main roads across the county are impassable this morning because of the snow and ice.

There are 20 cars stuck on the A146 at Stockton, blocking the road, police say.

The A140 is shut at Pulham and Aylsham.

There's also been a three-car crash on the Acle Straight.

  9. Up to 18 inches of snow in some places, police saypublished at 06:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

A lot of the problems on the roads so far this morning are being caused by snow being blown from fields and open spaces, police say.

Insp Roger Salmon said: "It's been a very busy night. We've had a number of major roads closed in Suffolk - our colleagues in Norfolk are having similar issues.

"We started getting calls at about 40 minutes passed midnight, on the A140 we were told vehicles were stranded in the snow there near Mendlesham. A14 eastbound was closed at junction 58 from Seven Hills for a large amount of the night due to accumulations of snow.

"We've got a large stretch of the A12 between Wrentham and Wangford that's blocked, and it's also blocked south of Blythburgh.

"We've got lots of snow coming off fields and open spaces on to the highways. We're getting accumulations of 18 inches of snow on major trunk roads, that's making it impossible to get through."

  10. A14 part closure and cars strandedpublished at 06:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

Snow is already taking its toll on a couple of our major routes this morning.

Drifting snow is causing major problems and Suffolk Police has been out overnight helping drivers as Suffolk Highways attempted to keep roads clear.

The A14 is shut eastbound from Seven Hills.

Plus there are problems on the A140 at Mendlesham - police say they are getting a lot of reports of abandoned vehicles on minor roads as well.

Galloway Coaches are unable to leave their depot in Mendlesham because of the blockages.

The A144 between Halesworth and Bungay is also closed at the moment.

There are no reports of any serious injuries.

The warning comes after a number of jack-knifed lorries and broken down vehicles caused problems on several main roads - including the A47, A11, A140 and A146.
